To Ann Corum: I so enjoyed reading the 1787 Census of Virginia for the Chesopeak Bay, north and south of the York River. I thought my Powells might have been from that area, but didn't see any that I thought might be in my line. I was just wondering if you might know of a William Powell Jr. that married a Adlaid Crawford in Madison Co. Va. around 1775. They had a son by the name of John Crawford Powell, that married a Pheobe Jackson, from Tn., and they settled in Marion Co. Tn., about 10 miles north of Chattanooga, Tn. I would like to know if William Powell Jr. and Adlaid Crawford had more children than the one son, John. John Crawford Powell, before he moved to Tn., lived in Wythe Co. Va. too, for a while. I would love to know who the parents are of William Powell Jr. and the parents of Adlaid Crawford, plus any other children that they might have had. I have a letter from a Robert Lee Powell, back in the early 1940's saying that our Powells looked like the Marion Co. Tn. Powells.! In some ways they do, and they have some of the same names, like Francis Marion (Male), Lewis Rankin Powell, Nancy Powell, & William Burl Powell. Any help would be so helpful to get over this brick wall. My Powells are Lewis R. Powell, that is listed in Hall Co. Ga., in the 1820 Census, he and his brother Pressly Powell are still there in the 1830 Census, but a while after 1830 Lewis moves to Walker Co. Ga., and Pressly moves to Elbert and Harlson Co. Ga., and later on into Ala. If you might know something about these Powells, I would so appreciate any help that anyone might be able to give. Lewis R. Powell, born in Va. 1792 is my Gr. Gr. Grandfather, and his brother Pressly born 1787 also in Va. would be my Gr. Gr. Uncle. If anyone can add to the following, please do so. The following is a discussion of the Life and times of Mary Powell, Philipson, Wynne, from documentation either researched by myself or forward to me by Mary Jean Zimmerman, or available on the web. To save space, I am referring to the book, "The Powell Families of Virginia and the South" as "the Lucas book", also referring to the book, "Powell: An Early York County Virginia Family" as the Hansford papers. This book is located at the York Co. Public Library Call # 929.2 Reference page 344 of the Lucas book: On page 344, footnote # 3, the Lucas book cites the will of Thomas Powell, dtd 28 Jul 1735, probated 21 May 1739. The will of this Thomas Powell cites wife as Mary. On page 344, footnote # 4, the Lucas book cites the will of another Thomas Powell, dtd 2 Apr 1749, probated 13 Jul 1749. The will of this Thomas Powell cites "dear mother Mary Phillipson". On page 14 of the Hansford papers, there is a discussion of Thomas Powell Jr. with will dtd 1749. Ms. Hansford cites that this Thomas was most probably a son of Thomas Powell with will dtd 1735, as does the Lucas book. Thomas Jr., cites his mother as Mary Phillipson. From the web page: _http://inman.surnameweb.org/documents/va-inman.htm_ (http://inman.surnameweb.org/documents/va-inman.htm) "Mary Powell, widow of Thomas Powell, and Robert Philipson were parties to a marriage contract dtd 5 Jul 1745, recorded 18 Nov 1745. He was a resident of Warwick Co. and she was of York." Robert Philipson died and left will proved 17 March 1746, and next Mary Powell Philipson married a Robert Wynne. Brunswick Co., VA., marriage record dtd 9 August 1753 between Robert Wynne and Mary Philipson. There is a Chancery suit between Moss vs Powell in the 1790 timeframe located in Brunswick Co. that Mary Jean Zimmerman has transcribed and if one reads this suit, the relationships of Mary Powell and Robert Philipson, and Robert Wynne is explained very well. This court action takes place over several years, and details many interrelated families. Greensville Co., VA was formed from Brunswick Co., VA 1780. In the records of Greensville Co., is found the will of Mary Powell, Philipson, Wynne as follows: Mary Wynne, Parish of Saint Andrews, Dec 5, 1786, Pro. Oct 23 1788, sons: Robert and John Powell; Grandson: William Powell, son of Edward Powell, deceased; Grand-daughter: Mary Lee, wife of James Lee; Grandson: Isaac Collier, son of Thomas Collier; Granddaughters: Tabitha Tuell Powell, daughter of Edward Powell, and Mary Powell, daughter of Robert Powell; EX: sons John and Robert Powell; wit: W. Mason Matt David, Lucy Wrenn. (will book # 1, p 120) Greensville Co., records contain much information about the Powell family cited in the Lucas book page 342 The Lucas book cites the information available in Greensville Co., but does not indicate a relationship between the Powells of York and the Powells of Greensville Co., VA. If one researches the paper trail, there is a direct line from York to Greensville Co., VA., or this is my belief. Thanks, and please add anything else available on Mary. I am a descendant of Edward Powell of Oglethorpe Co., GA and he was not the son of Thomas Powell as indicated on page 343 of the Powell book. Edward (son of Thomas with will dtd 1749) died and left will in Greensville Co., VA. Ann Corum
Hi Pat: Haven't heard from you in awhile. Thanks for responding and yes I do have the book. Did you read both p. 26 and 27 at the top? Lucas references Thomas Powell No 15 and his son John. I looked back for Thomas no 15 and think I found him on page 16. From what I gather (and following Lucas is a challenge) it seems he is indicating that "The Thomas" who had as his administrator a Robert Philipson was a son of William (b. 1647 d. 1711/12) of Norfolk county. Please read that and tell me if I have found the correct Thomas no 15. Thanks for your help. This Philipson was to have married a Powell widow, thought to be Mary Powell widow of Thomas dec. in York in 1739 probate, will 1735. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, Mary Jean Zimmerman

Hi Lee, Many thanks for replying - Do any Listers know of Atherton Peter POWELL? - was the marriage in USA I wonder? Any leads gratefully received. Regards, Madalyn Previous Thread: From: Lee Powell I could find nothing in my books, however, I did a google on Atherton and found NICOLE ETIENNE AND ATHERTON PETER POWELL were getting married on Feb. 20th, 2005. -----Original Message----- From: howandmad@talk21.com Am tracing the line of Richard POWELL (1732 - 1794) and his wife Elizabeth COTTRELL in England - their sons Samuel POWELL (1760 - 1834 who married Frances RICHMOND) and John Folliott POWELL (1771 - 1839 who married Frances ARMETT ) had 19 children between them - many of their descendents were given, as forenames, the maiden surnames of female ancestors who had married into this large and distinguished family which today is global. I am looking to extend my searches outside England and wondered if anyone might have an Atherton POWELL or a Folliott POWELL in their tree that might connect? - would love to hear and exchange info.
