    1. ALEXANDER POWELL from Miss. and Ala.
    2. PLEASE CAN SOMEONE HELP? I am looking for information on Alexander Powell who lived for a time in Monroe Co., Miss. and then moved to Ala. then back to Miss. He was married on May 2, 1847 to Sarah Thrailkill who was born on Nov 28, 1829. She died in 1866 in Monroe Co., Miss. I heard that he died there too but I don't know when or where they are buried. I would like to find anything out about them that I can to see if I can find out who his parents were and where he came from. Sarah had a sister that married a Charles Powell and I think that he might be a brother to my Alexander Powell. There is nothing else on either one that I can find. I ran across a Alexander Powell that was born in 1771 in Hartford Co., NC, he married a Dorcas Deberry and he died in Telfair Co., GA. He had a son named Alexander who was born Jan. 6, 1807 in Wayne Co., Ga. The Alexander that was born in Ga. married a Elizabeth Anderson and had about 13 children, so I don't know if my Alexander was one of them or not. Then I ran across a Alexander Powell who was born April 17, 1786 in NC, he married Martha Browder in Tenn. I have 2 children listed so I don't know if they had anymore children or not. Some records show my Alexander born in Ga and some show him born in NC. If you can help in anyway Please PLEASE help me.. This has been my brickwall. 3. The gentleman, John M. Powell is one of the southern Powells. A son of Ransom and Miriam Rowland Powell. John M. or J.M., born 1813, Rutherford County, NC. married 1842 in Washington County MS. Miss Cordelia Penrice. During the Civil War, the Powells resided in Pickaway County Ohio with their children, Ida Em, b. ca. 1845, Shelby County TN., Richard L. b, 1849, Shelby Co. Tn. a daughter Susan Powell b. 1854, and John M. Powell JR. b. 1854 Coahoma County, MS. Coahoma Co. Ms. is the families home in 1860 census. A son Augustus Powell, b. 1843, against his father's wishes, served in the Confederacy and died Sept. 16, 1865 at Alton, Ill. prison camp. His body was claimed by family friends in Pickaway County and is buried in an unmarked grave in the Fickardt family plot in Forest Cemetery, Circleville, Ohio. J.M. Powell, according to "The Lewis Family History," was in Coahoma County in 1866. He returned to his home in MS. to find his home in ruins and the plantation destroyed. To date, I have only located John M. Powell Jr. in Coahoma MS. He had married Ella M. Smith in 1876. This query may be a little long, I am hoping someone is familiar with this family and can tell me what happened to the family upon the return to MS. I would like any descendants to know where Augustus Powell's final resting place is. Thank you for any information you may be able to provide. Kindest regards, Mary A. 2. DEANNA AMES
    3. Ann, Thank you for the info from Oglethorpe Co. GA. I have looked at most of the Court Records in Oglethorpe Co. between 1800-1820 and have not found anything of interest for my Elizabeth (Betsey) Powell. I did find quite a bit of info for the other Powell families who came from VA. The Sally Powell named in Smith Johnson's Will dated 13 Dec 1803 and recorded 7 Jan 1806 in Oglethorpe Co. GA is the same person that married: David Powell Jr. and Sarah Winn Smith Johnson married 17 Jan 1791 in Halifax Co. VA. David Powell Jr. was likely the son of David Powell who was the son of Edward & Elizabeth Powell of Halifax Co. VA. Edward Powell's Will is dated of Halifax Co. VA. dated 1 Jul 1766 and recorded at Halifax Co. Court 16 Sep 1773. The Will of Moses Johnson states he was the son of Smith and Margaret Winn Johnson of Halifax Co VA. Moses names his daughter: Sally (Sarah) Winn Smith Johnson and his son, Benjamin Smith Johnson. *Will Book 1 1773-1783 Halifax Co VA (Chiarito); p. 92; p. 381; Moses Johnson; Will dated 17 Oct 1781; wife, Susannah; dau., Sally Smith Johnson; son, Benjamin Smith Johnson; Exr.."my well beloved father Smith Johnson". signed: Moses (x) Johnson The 1850 Copiah Co MS Census has 2 of David and Sarah W. S. Johnson Powell Jr.'s children. I have more documentation that Johnson Powell and Susanna (Anna) Powell Carter were the children of David and Sarah W.S. Johnson. There are no records to prove that Johnson Powell married and it is believed that he did not have any descendants. *p. 229 B Copiah Co MS: #295 Johnson Powell 47 yrs. Planter VA Thomas Carter 75 yrs. VA " Anna" Carter 52 yrs. b. VA Johnson Powell was more likely than not born in Halifax Co VA and the 1850 census states that Susanna (Anna) Winn Powell Carter was born in VA, also. Susanna (Anna) more likely than not married Thomas Carter in Halifax Co. VA.
