The Powell Disease or Syndrome that I have read about seems to cause problems with the lungs and stomach, and also the immune system, and it was thought to be related to our Native American heritage and the areas of the mountains where they lived.

Hi; My John H Powell b.1760 in Duplin Co, NC d. 1819. He lived in the Edgefield area from about 1780 to 1806 when he and his family migrated to Jones Co, GA. His son Hiram Powell married Penniah Barnes. I wonder if there is a connection with your Barnes? It is a genetic, nervous system disease known formally as Hereditary Sensory Autonomic Neuropathy, or HSAN, or HSN. Symptoms are generally a loss of feeling in the hands and feet, which eventually produces a crippling effect. If this sounds like what you were inquiring about, I'd be interested in hearing from you as this disease has been in my family line for generations and is not, to the best of my knowledge, found in too many families in the world. You had indicated that it might be a native American thing, so perhaps you are looking into something else. In any case, good luck in your research.

Ash avenue, a resident of Marshfield most of his life, died of complications at 1:30 o’clock yesterday afternoon in St. Joseph’s Hospital. He was 75 years of age. Beginning this evening, the body will repose at the Rembs Funeral Home. The Rev. A. O. Pinke, pastor of Faith Lutheran Church, will officiate at funeral services there at 1 o’clock Friday afternoon. Burial will be made in Hillside cemetery. Mr. Powell was born at Plainfield Oct. 24, 1881, and came to Marshfield as a young boy. He was married here on Feb. 19, 1906, to the former Caroline Freund, who survives him. For a number of years he was employed at Blum Brothers factory, and later he operated a tavern for 14 years. He retired in 1945. Other survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Jake (Alice) Rizzi, Spencer; Mrs. Esther Earsley, Milwaukee; three sons, Henry, route 1, Marshfield; Edwin, Marshfield; Frederick, Milwaukee; 21 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a brother, Arthur, route 1, Marshfield, and one sister, Mrs. George Meyer, route 1, Marshfield.
