Author: LynnMPrice Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.powell/7038.1.1.1.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thank you very much for your response. One of the challenges that I am having in tracing family history is the fact that although I am a descendent of POWELL, there are no living males that I know of with the surname of Powell. Many men within the family have died and did not have the same last name. Hence my question: does the last name matter? Is there any value in testing the available men in the family even though we know there surname is not POWELL? Since I am not a scientist and have a limited understanding about DNA testing - I wonder if it makes sense to test the men who are Powell descendants? (Four generations removed) I know that from a broad DNA perspective, there is an opportunity to connect but I wonder if it's really like throwing a needle into a haystack just based on the generational differences between the men. Another item that may impact the value of the testing is that we are African-Americans. Hence, the name Powell may not really be a true indicator of our lineage. My father died fairly young. My fathers parents had divorced when he was 10 and he had gone to livie with his mothers relatives. Both his mother and father were dead before he was 21. It was about a year after I did the FF test that Les who's grandmother was the daughter of my Andrew the an older brother of my GGrandfather Charles. With the info I learned from him working on Ancestry I now have the family back to 1780 and another new cousin, descended from Charles and Andrew's sister Nancy. But with Family Finder a good paper trail back 4 generations for most of your lines is very helpful. I had sent for my fathers birthcert so had his fathers name on that line but on my mothers, mother I still don't have a surname for that line. I know her first name was Martha she was born in MO. had 4 children and died in KS her husband remarried and had 9 more children.....But can't find anyone w! ho know the surname Martha. But someday. Hope this is helpful. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Maybe Watkin had been married previously and Lurinda went to live with a stepchild. The niece she was living with remarried and moved to Kansas and then Florida. In a letter written to Lurinda during the Civil War, this niece asked her aunt to remember her to her Uncle Wat and to Cora and Belle. I have no idea who Cora and Belle are. I thought maybe they were the wives of Watkins brothers as I think the Watkin Powells lived with them at least for a time. Thank you so much for your help and information. Picture of his gravestone/marker is attached -- Howell's sons are the Powells who developed Shadeland. If you have a Howell Powell dying in Cinti in 1876, I might be able to tie it into the family, but its not Watkins' brother (at least the Watkin referred herein). 3. Went through some old notes and found a record of 1860 Census for Perry County, Mississippi listing Hinton Powell which says he was age 57 and born in Georgia. He was household #72, and my GG Grandfather John Powell was Household #73. Of course, many families wandered through several states (or territories) before they settled. I also found a record of a Land Patent issued to Hinton Powell at the Augusta land office (that would be in Perry County, Mississippi) with a date of April 24, 1820. -----Original Message----- From: powell-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:powell-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Cathy Sent: Tuesday, December 18, 2012 9:43 AM To: gc-gateway@rootsweb.com; powell@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [POWELL] Elias Powell Can you give us birthplace and residence in early adult years? Don't have too much direct info on the Schuylkill County Powells, other than their parents (Thomas and Elizabeth -- eventually came to US and settled with them; Thomas died at sea; mother to Port Carbon). The plot in which he was buried is owned by David A Powell (his brother and the foundry operator). David is also buried in Spring Grove Cemetery. Have significant amount of info on the Powells (and still trying to figure it out too) -- your Watkins and David are of the Shadeland Powells. There were Powell cousins in SW Ohio (Hamilton and Butler Counties). Also, FYI, parents of your Watkins Powell are Rebecca Adams and Watkin Powell (1773-6 Apr 1850); and his father was Watkin Powell (~1713-1802). Most of the family emigrated to Utica NY in 1801.
