I know nothing about these people, but have you looked in the libraries at Springfield and in the genealogy section at Arlington Heights, IL? We went to the new Lincoln museum and dropped into the Lincoln library, and found 5 different references to relatives of mine on the Gaston side. People who were here in the early to mid 1800s may very well be in early history books of their county or even the state. I found 2 other references in the Arlington Heights, IL library (they have a reference room dedicated to genealogy)

You might try posting a message on Classmates.com. Since you know where he graduated from high school, have you contacted that school to see if they have an alumni association.
