Parents names and county unknown. He appears in 1838 in Macon County, AL with a land purchase from the Land Office in Montgomery, AL. Next, in the 1850 census of Macon County with a Clarke family as a farmer. He served in the CSA from 3/1863 to 8/1864 with the 45th AL Infantry. No 1860 census record, but does appear in the 1870 census in Jefferson county, AL. Then in 1873 the family appears in Waco, Mclennan county, TX. Any help on the the South Carolina Powell connection would be appreciated.

Kerry: Thanks for the tips re the IL libraries, but we live in CA so it's a bit difficult for us to make that many different libraries. We know that the Newberry Library in Chicago, the Allen County Library in Ft. Wayne and the Willard Library in Evansville, IN are also super genealogy resource centers...and then, of course, there is my favorite...the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. But, here is another one which is of great assistance for the counties (DeKalb and LaSalle) to which the HOWELL POWELL family traveled via covered wagon from Boston: The Northern Illinois University Library in DeKalb, IL.
