    1. Powells of Bertie Co, NC
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Powell, Mitchell, Jenkins Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/WOBBAIB/12.48.181.2 Message Board Post: I believe that Cader Powell of Bertie Co, NC was the son of George Powell. "Ct Records of Bertie Co NC abstracted by Haun 11 May 1736 ~ The Last Will & Testament of George Powell was proved by the oaths of Wm. Moor, Charles Horne, Edmd Todd? the subscribing witnesses there to & Kadar Powell Exr. took the Exrs. Oath." I don't have the full text of George's will. Wish that I did... but it leads me to believe that Cader was his son. I also don't know where the information/proof of Mary Williams comes from. Here's an interesting tidbit: 8 Feb 1742 ~ Cader Powell proved his Rights to wit: Cader Powell, Elizh Powell, Susannah Powell, Mary Powell, Ann Powell, Charity Powell, Rebekah Powell, Susannah Powell, Elizh Powell, whites & Jack, Sambo & Bob blacks. (2 Elizabeths and 2 Susannahs ? Cader, Jr born after 1742 - MAM) Cader led a fairly public life. He served on several juries. His land probably was on land that became Hertford Co as a deed made in 1768 witnessed by Cader, Jr refers to him as Cader Powell of Hertford. He served as a Vestryman of St Barnabas Parish, Hertford Co in 1771. Here's another interesting tidbit: Chowan Co NC Deed Bk A-1 pg 227, Feb 28 1742 Cader Powell deeded to Robert Powell his half of land that had been given to George Powell and Robert Powell by John Powell. This suggests to me that George and Robert were brothers and that John was possibly their father. I believe that Cader, Jr married Mary Jenkins, daughter of James Jenkins (1726 - 1796 Bertie Co, NC). Frances Foote was married to another Cader Powell not this one. I also believe that one of Cader, Jr's older sisters was the first wife of William Mitchell and the mother of his son Cader Mitchell. Cader Mitchell married the sister of Mary Jenkins Powell, Elizabeth Jenkins. That makes the Cader Powell, Cader Mitchell's uncle and brother-in-law. To make matters even cozier, Cader Mitchell's 1/2 sister Winnie married Mary and Elizabeth Jenkins brother James, Jr. I have just recently started looking at this family, so I would appreciate any help! Marcia

    3. I have a pretty good paper trail for the above James Powell, but I am stumped as to his parentage. He was born in Lincoln, GA and married to Lucinda Ashmore. Has anyone researched this family and do you have a sense of where the parents originated? I need a place to start. Thanks Cathy

Surnames: HICKS, POWELL, MATHIS, MATHEWS, MILLER, WASHINGTON Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/WOBBAIB/5250.1.1 Message Board Post: Hi Hank: Quinney POWELL was listed in the 1830 Houston Co. GA census. There are several other POWELLs listed nearby his home as follows: page 276 Lewis POWELL, page 278 James POWELL, page 279 Sampson POWELL, page 281 John POWELL, page 282 Benjamin POWELL, page 282 Silas POWELL, page 283 William POWELL, page 286 James POWELL, page 276 Quinney POWELL, page 278 James POWELL. Is this your William? I also find that Quinney did several land transactions in Randolph Co. GA (below). My 4th great grandmother Nancy Ann POWELL (Quinney's daughter with Patsey HICKS) married one of their next door neighbors, Johnson MATHEWS (MATHIS). Johnson was from Cumberland Co. NC, and was son of John Hardy MATHEWS b. 1749 Edgecombe Co. NC. Additionally, Quinney had past transactions with Johnson. I don't know what happened to Johnson MATHEWS first wife (Milly Cawfield and children), but later married Nancy Ann POWELL, Quinney's daughter. Nancy's mother was Patsey HICKS who was a 100% Cherokee Indian woman who had grown up in Indian Territory. We do not know what happened to Patsey HICKS. 1. JOHN CHILDRESS and MARGERY POWELL of Amherst Co, VA
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: CHILDRESS - WILKINSON - BROOKS - EZELL - HAMBLIN - SEAT - POWELL, JOPLING - Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/WOBBAIB/5252 Message Board Post: According to some well seasoned researchers and their sources, this is the information I would like to confirm if possible? Here is what I have at this point and would really appreciate verification if any of you know of these POWELLS. Thanks! 1) SOURCE - Virginia Hanks - "Childers-Childress Family Association" - Deeds - APPOMATOX and UPER SAPPONIE CREEK (VA) - JOHN and MARGERY POWELL CHILDRESS of INDIANA TO JESSE BLAND of AMHERST COUNTY (VA), LAND BEQUEATHED TO JOHN CHILDRESS by WILL OF THOMAS POWELL, 18 March, 1783. NOTE - I know there was a connection of the BLAND family to POWELL, I believe through marriage, correct if wrong? 2) SOURCE - BETTY RENFROE - SEPT 1999, POWELL-LIST (Rootsweb archives) - AS written - "Mrs. Hiden gives THOMAS POWELL a son THOMAS POWELL, JR. lived in Amherst [VA] and lived near RICHARD [Powell] may be his brother, his wife was AMY. In his will, he left property to ELIZABETH PEYTON, CATHERINE RIGGIN, JOHN CHILDRESS, WILLIAM WARE, GODSON. His widow married WILLIAM HOWARD after his death. I think THOMAS POWELL, JR. may have had a daughter who married JACOB SMITH a neighbor of RICHARD POWELL, also JOHN and MARY SMITH. THOMAS POWELL, JR. and his wife both left wills, they burned." - "THOMAS POWELL, JR. may have had a son named RICHARD POWELL married ELIZABETH, of age in 1728, his children are EDMUND, CLARY born 1739 m. David WOODRUFF, WIATT, RICHARD, JR, JOHN, RHODA who married JOHN TUCKER [NOTE: John Tucker was the son of Sophia Childress and Matthew Tucker - Sophia Childress was daughter of Abraham Childress lll (aka Childers) and his wife, Elizabeth CANNON, daughter of William CANNON and Judith WOODSON], Winfred, Thomas - Some of this family went to Lincoln County, KY." - Ms. Renfroe also quotes Rev Lucas on his genealogical information regarding Thomas Powell, Jr. and their branch in Amherst County (VA). 3) SOURCE - CHILDRESS-List (rootsweb archives) Gary and Mark Childress series - According to their series (March 2005), they say that MARGERY POWELL married JOHN CHILDRESS and after they left Amherst County (VA), they migrated to NC (Burke and Wilkes County till 1795c) until they settled in KNOX COUNTY, (TN) and in 1804c they received land from the estate of.Thomas Powell in his will, of which they sold. Would anyone on this board know of these Powells? I've done a search for a MARGERY POWELL and have not found any mention of the Christian name whatsoever. Nor have I found a marriage of a JOHN CHILDRESS to Margery POWELL. I did find POWELLS married to the above, along with JOPLING. As you can see, Ms Virginia Hanks publication states they (John and Margery Powell Childress) were living in INDIANA when they received the land in Amherst Co. (VA) but, Gary Childress states they were in TENNESSEE when they received the land. Anyone have a comment or can verify? Was there a MARGERY POWELL and whose daughter was she? The JOPLINGS, WARES, CHILDRESS did marry into the POWELL family, but I can't confirm the JOHN CHILDRESS above. MaryJean

The notes gone to say: These notes have been collected and printed by Glen Powell and Charles Powell with help from many that contributed to the data. You copy and distribute freely as you wish, however, we must request that you leave this face sheet attached and that you send us data for any erros or additional information that you can provide. 3. You missed the point. I really am interested in West Virginia POWELLs, and I was disappointed when the message had nothing to do with the subject. Had the subject indicated a far away state or country, I would probably have used my delete button. I'm still wondering who on earth this Floence Powell is, when she lived in WV, etc. It's helpful for the subject to match the message and, vice versa.
