Dear Diane, Dear Diane, I have a copy of an extract which I got at the Marshall Co. TN library. I also have papers from the History Society Librarian of Maury County, who recently sent me quite a bit of material that I have not been able to get to as yet. The lineage is difficult to sort out, due to the convoluted way in which the suit is written, but, if you are looking only for the names, let me suggest: Go to genforum.genealogy.com and go to the Powell forum. Go to message #10066 dated May 19, 2003. It is from me and I give the list of all the children and grandchildren, along with spouse, where given. I hope this is of help to you. I have the bible that lists vital statistics about Austin Powell and his two families. He was born 1829 in Adair Co., KY and died Jan 1898 in Marshall Co TN. The bible gives details about his 20 children by two marriages (1) Sarah Adeline Robinson and (2) Emily James Thomson): Granville Coleman Melvine Elizabeth Mary Ella Andrew Jackson Ida Sara Adeline Henrietta Callie Jane Mary Emily Camilla Nannie Betty Austin Thompson William Henry Flavius Milton Pinkney John Eris Lillian Emily Monica Minnie Jimmie Ethel Gipson Day The bible was given (in Tennessee) to my mother by, I believe, one of the above or her daughter. Before she received it, a genealogist had removed the title pages but had enclosed a typewritten affidavit that covered the names within. There is no actual signature nor is there any name attached to the affidavit. I do not know WHERE these pages may be at present time; I imagine some library somewhere. I would very much like to ascertain the source of the bible. It is written in one hand until it came to me - at which time, not knowing what I was doing, I added more family information. The reason I'd like to know is so that I can verify the spelling of the names; were they written by a contemporary or by the one of the next generation? (There are discrepancies, for example, in how the current generation spells the name from what is in the bible.) If anyone should come across Powell family bible records that include those names, I'd appreciate being notified. Mary-Gene Page California

We have several descendants of Elias Powell of Culpeper County VA and Burke County NC already in the project. Where did your James Powell live? Elias had a brother named James. After arrival in TN he married Margaret Knox (a widow). Her children were all by her first marriage to James Knox. One of Ambrose's sons married one of Margaret's daughters, so depending on how you are descended, you might be connected to her. For Ambrose's children, begin with the 1830 lawsuit which names them all, along with some grandchildren. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
