Author: gruenbein Surnames: Powell, Grace, McDonel, Chance, Nichterlein, Nash Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.powell/5545.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello Ken, Thank you so much for the informative post. My husband is also a descendent of Tunis Powell. His full name was Dennis Tunis Powell. He married Tryphosa Hand. They had a daughter Levisa (Lovicia; Louisa) who married a Thompson Grace. Is that your lineage? I noticed your last name is Grace. My husband's ancestor is Levisa's sister, Mary. She had a son, Charles, b. 1871. His father was a Mr. Champion, according to family notes, but there is no indication that Mary was married to him. She married Levi McDonel in 1875 and they had several children. It appears that Charles was not living with his mother and stepfather - at least not during the 1880 census. Charles, his uncle Charles, his grandmother Tryphosa (Tunis had died that year in April), were all living with Levisa and her husband and children. Charles married Florence Chance of Cumberland County in 1892. (She died in 1897 and Charles married Katarina Nichterlein.) Charles and Florence had one daughter, Amanda Cramp McDonel, b. 1893. Amanda is my husband's mother. She married Edward Drake Nash in 1916. My husband was born in 1917. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The family appears in the 1871 census living in Durham, England. It appears my g-grandmother, Sarah Jones, followed him there as that's where they married and where their first daughter was born. They immigrated to the US in 1887 and settled in the Greenfield section of the city of Pittsburgh - which actually is only a few miles from Homestead. Your Powell's aren't familiar to me, but if I come across anything I'll let you know. Nicholas & Sarah Powell nee Jones are buried in Homewood Cemetery near the Squirrel Hill section of the city of Pittsburgh. I am a descendant of Clara Elizabeth Bell, whose maternal grandmother was Mary Mourning Powell, dtr. of Benjamin Powell, son of Caswell, son of Dempsey Powell. Mary Mourning Powell was always called 'Pollie'.Her sisters were Eliza Jimmie and Lydia Caswell Powell. I have a handwritten document written by Lydia Caroline Powell (m. Elisha Ray of Texas)which she titles "Geneology of the Powells". I allowed the Oklahoma Historical Society to copy this document, which unfortunately has fragments torn out of it. It starts with "The ancestors came from Wales, settled in Va. and moved to Halifax Co. N.C. before the Revolution." She then lists all of the sons and dtrs and who they married, where they moved (Tenn., Ms., Texas, Ind. Territory. If anyone wants it, I have a photograph of Lydia Caroline Powell and her husband, Mr. Ray with his two children, also another tintype of Mary Mourning and Eliza Jimmie dressed in their finery, and a professional photograph of Lydia Caro! line, who had no issue, being self-described as a "barren woman, of as much use as a barren field". She whiled her time away in taking a trip to Wales to aquire furniture, painting in oils wherever she traveled. I have two of her paintings, one of a scene in Fla., one in Wales on "My grand tour of the old country". She was a newpaper columnist, a forerunner of Ann Landers, with a column called "Ask Aunt Pollie". She regularly took the waters in Eureka Springs, Ak. She said of her sister, Mary Mourning who married ____Bell that "she married beneath her". Why? Money? family? My sister has two large portraits of Mr. Bell and Mary Mourning (Pollie) and he is extremely handsome. Lydia was a member of Colonial Dames, as was her cousin in Texas. The Okla. Hist. 3. I am curious about these books since I am descended from both Powells and Fowlers. Incidentally, the "married beneath" could mean even just one of a myriad of things - the Powells seem to have felt themselves quite high and mighty. Did an ancestor lose money in the Civil War? Perhaps one ws involved in a fight at a tavern, or was brought in for not having filled the responsibility of road-maintaining. Maybe, even, someone married a Cherokee without approval. All kinds of things - I'm not sure what people felt about merchants in those days, but the English aristocracy certainly did not approve. The census email you sent me showed my grandfathers whole family. I called my father to get more information which I have already sent to you. He is would like me to try and find the rest of his dads family. Carl had a brother named Irving that was shown on the email you sent me, and my father confirmed that there is an uncle irving and his grand parents names where frank and mary. I have never been able to find any of this information on my own, I cant tell you how much i appreciate your help. This is all very exciting. My father said that his dad carl died sometime around 1996, 97 or 98 he is not sure, that is all the information that he could get from grandma. She is most reluctant to help with this search.
