I'm looking for the family of Osvil/Oswell/Osburn Powell & his wife (thus her in-laws) Amelia/Milley (Hickson). They lived in Mobile County per their 1870 - 1910 censuses. I hope you are well, and look forward to your response. - h Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I've been unable to trace James Powell any further back but I do know that a number of Powell's where living in Coreley and the area at the time of his marriage so I'm thinking he may have been related to them somehow. James profession was a Malster (mixed the hops and barley for the brewing of beers) which took the family to Ludlow and then later to the Black Country. My family still live in the Black Country area today. Is anyone else researching these people because if so I would love to share and discuss further. Kind regards Adrian Powell Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have not used the msg. board and don't know how it works, but here are my questions. 1. What is your source of info from earlier than 1850? 2. Could you list Lemuel's parents and siblings? 3. Do you have Bible records, wills? 4. Where did the story come from about Lemuel's death? I have the Census for 1860, 1870 and 1880 and the tax rolls thru 1884 with him listed. I am a gg-granddaughter to Lemuel and Martha Allbritton Benton that came to Texas from Simpson MS in 1850 to Trinity Co., TX. In 1860. They moved to Freestone C., 1870, then Angelina Co. 1880 in Texas. Some of the children moved to Anderson Co., TX. I have a tree on Ancestry called Baldwin and Benton Nov 2008. Please feel free to look at it and get back with me. All "living" people's names are blanked out but if you would like to see them, send me your e-mail address and I can invite you to the site and you would be able to see them . Thank you so much and I hope to hear from you soon. Dora Ann Benton Baldwin [email protected] Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Years ago I had corresponded with Elizabeth H Taylor who was researching the Powells and Harvills. At that time she told me that she hadn't proved it yet but suspected Elizabeth's parents were Jesse Powell and Charity Harvill. I have been searching everywhere and find no proof of this. Can you possibly point me to the right direction? In my search, I have gathered numerous bits and pieces on Powells and Harvills. Author: CherylWhite9962 Surnames: Powell, Owsley, Keil, Rees, Henry Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.powell/6636/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Minneapolis Messenger, Ottawa County, Kansas, July 21, 1932, page 3: MRS. ARTHUR REES Quinnetta Powell was born in New Vienna, Ohio, Oct. 6, 1863, and departed this life July 15, 1932, at her home on Laurel Street, Minneapolis, Kansas. She, with a whole class of little girls, in a Baptist Sunday school, was converted at the age of eight years and united with the Baptist church of which she remained a member for several years. Afterward she transferred her membership to the Presbyterian church of which she was an active member for many years, freely giving her services at all times as long as her health permitted, to the duties of the church, especially to the musical programs, as she was a talented musician. During the flu epidemic of 1918, her services were freely given day and night, as many of her friends can testify. She was married when quite young to Amos Owsley. To this union one son was born, H.B. Owsley of St. Louis, Mo., who came to attend the funeral. After the death of Mr. Owsley, Mrs. Owsley was again married to Augustus Keil. To this union there were born three sons Kenneth and Kirby who died in infancy and Dane Keil who resides in Minneapolis. On the passing of Mr. Keil many years ago, Mrs. Keil came to Kansas, making her home with her sister where on Dec. 8, 1912, she became the wife of Arthur Rees who survives her. Mrs. Rees was a successful schoolteacher for several terms, but her marked musical ability led her to the teaching and composition of music which resulted in many beautiful songs and poems. Mrs. Rees was a member of the O.E.S.D. of R., Relief Corps, Pythian Sisters, Knights and Ladies of Security, Atlantean Brown Club, as well as the Kansas Authors' Club. She was a woman of apparently robust constitution, until about ten years ago, when she was suddenly stricken with what later caused her death. She had gradually grown weaker until Friday afternoon at 6:30 when her tired spirit took its flight. Besides her husband A.G. Rees, she leaves two sons, H.B. Owsley of St. Louis, and Dane Keil of Minneapolis, one brother, J. K. Powell of Chattanooga, Tenn., one sister, Mrs. Clara Henry of Minneapolis, four grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many associated who will say, "We have indeed lost a friend." The following beautiful lines descriptive of "Evening in the Hills" afterward published in the Year Book of the Kansas Authors' Club marked the close of her poetical career: "Evening in the Hills" Beyond the purple crest of distant hills Lies the City of Silence Crimson flecked are its Spires Silver mists float between them And a Golden Sea Beyond. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 in the Presbyterian church with Dr. J.C. Everett in charge. "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "Whispering Hope" were sung as requested by Mrs. Rees by Mrs. L.E. Harvey and George Copeland. Interment was in Highland cemetery.
