I'm afraid I've been unable to trace any further back from James Powell born abt 1803 in Montgomeryshire. It's possible we're share the same ancestors but the surname Powell was a common one used around Montgomeryshire and Shropshire. The problem is James may have been born in Montgomeryshire but his parents could have relocated from anywhere. My research on the Powell family isn't going very well. It would be fantastic if I was related to the Powells you mentioned with all those titles. Take care. Kind regards Adrian Powell Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. She was born around 1805 in Rockingham county. I believe her father's name was John, as he was the only Powel in the 1810 census in Rockinghame county. On 15 Apr 1819, she married William Berry in Rockingham county. Apparently , the Berry's descended upon Rockingham county from Laurens County SC, as there were many Berry's getting hitched in Rockinham about that time. My problem is in her name. She later moved to Coffee and Grundy County's Tennessee and her name is listed in various censii as Micah, Mieke, Mickey, Micki...just to name a few. Melah/ Micha and William had three children: Green A., Susanah, and John D. Let me make a correction...Melah/ Micha may have been born in Virginia, as it was listed as her birthplace in one of the subsequent census records. Also, her sister may have been Susan (hence the daughter Susanah's name) who married one Henry Strader on 17 Jul 1823. Has anyone else run across her? Any information would be greatly appreciated. IL shows Powell families in Cairo, IL. There was one that looked likely: Cyril Powell age 38 Fireman Parries 27 wife Mable A. 3 Robert M. 9/12 (b. July 1929) I found this reference for Cairo IL Veterans services: Senior Citizens Ctr/IETC 22nd & Poplar St. Cairo, IL 62914 9:00-4:00 1st & 3rd Thursdays 618-734-0535 Perhaps by contacting this office, they can suggest how to find out if they had a son named Charles in 1931 and if there is still family living in Cairo. There should be something in the local newspaper about his disappearance in 1950. Putting something in the local newspaper now might find a family member, too. good luck! It's nice to see you still plugging away on the Powell line. Some questions arise from your most recents finds. The first is what have you found that point to Ambrose Powell as the name of Elizabeth and her siblings. Do you have any idea of what Temperance's first name was, since she is just using the initial A. Cindy Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. When he entered service he gave Alexander County, IL as his home of record. His remains were never recovered. Our government has no family contact at this time for this soldier Soldier: CHARLES EDWARD POWELL Born: 1931 Date of loss: 30 November 1950 When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (79years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency. I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family. (Portroe, Burgesbeg) Ireland, who latter came to Amerca and settled in Osceola, Iowa. Elizabeth's sisters were: A. Temperance who married a Gully from Tipperary (settled in Aurora, Colorado) and Jane who married Jeremiah Hogan (came to America in 1849 via Canada) and settled in North Pueblo, CO. The Powell sisters also had two brothers that came to America with them, George and Thomas. An 1850 Clay County, Indiana census, shows them all living in the same household, while working on the RR. Jeremiah was a carpenter. I believe they were all brothers and sisters of Stephen Powell and Ambrose Kyte Powell, and others, and children of Ambrose Powell. Cyndi Wood who does much research on the Powells has suggested the children of Ambrose Powell (Anglican) married local Catholics. There are many interconnections: 1. Michael Hogan, my gr.gr. grandfather, came to America with his uncle, Jeremiah Hogan and aunt Jane Powell Hogan. Michael married Bridget Meagher daughter of John and Elizabeth Powell Meagher. 2. A. Temperance Powell married Mr. Gully. Their daughter Elizabeth married a DeLaney, their son John married the daughter of Michael and Bridget Hogan. 3. George Powell lived in Pueblo, Colorado and died in 1879 at the home of his sister, Jane. His wife was Ellen (?) and they had several children. Lafayette appears on 1910 Greene Co, Mo census as you mentioned and on 1920 census with wife Gracie/Grace. Grace was the informant on his death Certificate. Lura may have been the dau of Milligan. I'm looking for information regarding my great-grandmother Lura Powell Terry (born 1893) and her father Milligan Powell - both of which I know precious little. I found a 1910 census that may relate to my family. It listed a Lafayette M Powell living in Greene County, Missouri, with his wife Martha J. Louisa Lura was listed as his daughter and my g-gma lived and died in Springfield, Greene Co, MO. I was told Milligan was originally from Chattanooga, TN, but Georgia is listed as his place of birth on the record. I've also been told I have Choctaw and Cherokee heritage, but I have no idea if this is a possible source. Does this ring a bell for anyone?? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks, M.
