When he entered service he gave East Baton Rouge Parish, LA as his home of record. His remains were never recovered. Our government has no family contact at this time for this soldier Soldier: WILLIE POWELL Born: 14 May 1922 Date of loss: 12 Feb. 1951 POW When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (79years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency. I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family. Oh boy, my pet peeve: Here we go again with the subject lines that state, "Searching for the Powells". Please keep in mind that we digest readers do not read all the messages...just the subject line looking for specific Powell names or places, dates, etc. Please be more specific in subject lines; I wish the site administrator would make a point of bringing this to the attention of all the readers. My subject line: Howell Powell of Wales, MA and IL. Jo-Ann Seitzinger
As was explained before the subject line is coming from people who are posting to messages on the Powell RootsWeb forum and those messages are then sent to the mailing list. You have no control over the subject line when you reply to a message on the forum. Second, it doesn't really matter if you are reading in digest mode or not you get a list of messages and I get a list of messages. Yes, I'd like to see more meaningful messages but I am just glad to see an active list.
