Their common ancestors are Nicholas Schryer and Mary Eastwood who probably lived in Vermont. I am just getting started on researching the genealogy of my family and all I know is that my grandfather(Joseph William Potvin) said that my ggrandfather was born in Corcoran, MN in 1889? and that he had brothers Archie and Ray and a sister named Bernice. He told me that my gggrandfathers name was also Joseph William Potvin but is not able to recall what my gggrandmothers name was.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/0lABAEB/116.1 Message Board Post: Hello, a bit of info that might be of help.First of all, vermont used to be french as the name vert mont suggests which in French means green mountain, it was annexed to the US approx 200 yrs ago. there was also a great migration from the province of quebec towards New England in the 1860s due to economic difficulties in Lower Canada your ancestors probably immigrated at that time. my own potvin ancestors came from France to Quebe in 1756 under name of De La Garde (Nicholas) from Poitou whose inhabitants are called Poitevins from which derives our common family name of Potvin fro some unknown reason it was changed to this. In Canada Potvin is a very widespread name with a concentration of Potvins in the Saguenay region of Lac St Jean. If you wish to find your ancestors there is a good chance that they originated in France and immigrated to New France (Quebec) and then to Vermont. I hope that these tidbits of info may help , by the way Michel Potvin is common in my family in fact one of my brothers bears this name . God Bless from Wilfrid Potvin Canada
Hi Folks: The following message is posted for the benefit of "new" members of this POTVIN Mailing List and will be re-posted on an ongoing basis. --------------------------------------------------------------- Every SUNDAY evenings starting at 7:00 PM (Eastern time), all Acadian-Cajun cousins are invited to meet in the ACADIAN-CAJUN Chat Room located at: http://www.acadian.org/chat.html This is your opportunity to "TALK" with all your Acadian-Cajun friends and cousins. Won't you join in? PS: If this is your first time "at the party", you may want to arrive a bit early, in order to have the opportunity to check things and figure out how to enter the 'Chat room". PSS: As we all know, the Mailing List is primarily intended for genealogy-related discussions however, there are times when subscribers might want to discuss a subject matter not quite suitable for the Mailing List. Obviously the ACADIAN-CAJUN Chat Room is an excellent medium for this purpose. While the regularly scheduled Sunday meeting (7:00 PM Eastern) is a _weekly_ happening for the subscribers of this POTVIN Mailing List, keep in mind that anyone...at anytime...can meet to "talk" in the Chat Room. Just (privately) send each other an e-mail message and decide what date/time you want to meet. Then, at the pre-arranged time, click on the URL address: http://www.acadian.org/chat.html ...and follow instructions there, for your get-together. PSSS: You must have your Internet Browser (Netscape, Explorer etc.) java-enabled. If you are not certain how to do this, contact your Internet Service Provided for assistance. YVON L. CYR, [email protected] Facilitator of Rootsweb's POTVIN Mailing List. For details visit URL : http://www.acadian.org/rootsweb.html

Hi Folks: The following message is posted for the benefit of "new" members of this POTVIN Mailing List and will be re-posted on an ongoing basis. --------------------------------------------------------------- You may not be aware that all e-mail messages posted on this POTVIN Mailing List since its inception, are being archived indefinitely by Rootsweb. Not only does this eliminate the trouble of you "saving" messages on your own computer, but it provides ready-access for any message you've previously seen here (or may have missed when you were away or temporarily unsubscribed from the List). There are two archives of the mailing list messages... 1. The first and most complete is the _interactive_ search at: http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl This is an interface to the archives for most of the RootsWeb mailing lists, current through the past day or so. In the form provided, enter the name POTVIN. You will then be provided a form in which to enter the surname (or whatever) that you are looking for. 2. The second archive is the _threaded_ archives and is located at: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ Here again, you merely enter the name of the Mailing List [POTVIN] in the form provided and then click on "Submit Query". --------------------------------------------------------- IMPORTANT NOTES: 1. As you will see when you visit the above noted URL addresses, all archived messages can be viewed in "chronological" order, or in "thread" (by subject) order. The importance of using a brief but descriptive "subject" when you're posting messages (or replies) on the Mailing List, should be quite obvious. It is also important to also use the _original_ "subject" when replying to a message. This new service is provided for YOUR/OUR benefit... so let's all work together to make it successful. So, when posting a message to the Mailing List, please don't use a vague "subject heading" like...'Need Help'. Instead use a brief but descriptive "Subject" which best describes the content of your message. 2. If you are subscribed in the "Digest Mode", be certain to remove the Digest Reference Number in the "Subject" column, when replying to messages on the Mailing List, and replace same with a brief/descriptive "Subject" based on the content of your reply. 3. Another very important consideration, is that reply messages to initial inquiries should be posted to the Mailing List, rather than sent _privately_ to the originator. This is the only way all can see both the question... and the answer. Many thanks for your anticipated cooperation. YVON L. CYR, [email protected] Facilitator of Rootsweb's POTVIN Mailing List. For details visit URL : http://www.acadian.org/rootsweb.html
