Someone had asked for whom the USS Stephen Potter DD-538 was named. This U.S. Navy "Fletcher Class" destroyer was named after Ensign Stephen Potter, who was the first American naval aviator to be credited with shooting down an enemy aircraft. He was in a formation of flying boats, on long-range reconnaissance of the German coast, during the later stages of World War I, when the formation was attacked by German seaplanes. Ensign Potter shot down one of the attackers.
