Hello I am new and am searching for information on an Andrew Potter. Andrew Potter married Barbary Pettitt in 1871 in Campbell County, Tennessee. In 1880 Campbell County Tennessee Census Barbara/Barbary Potter is listed as widowed. 3 Children Adeline, Matilda, and R.W. (male). I have not been able to find anything else on Andrew Potter. The children have parents born in Tennessee and North Carolina. No Potters listed in 1870, or 1860 Campbell Co., Tennessee Census. Andrew would have been born in 1850 or before. Has anyone lost an Andrew? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for any help you may give me. Am willing to trade information! Thanks Debra Elam Mach3939@Netzero.net

Has anyone come across a connection between the Plume [Plumb, Plumme] family and/or Symonds with the Potters at an early date - pre 1650? I have details of a Plume/Symond connection here in Essex England with numerous references to the Plumes and Symonds in Potter and associated families wills pre-1600. I know that John POTTER was a servant of the SYMONDS circa 1580 when the SYMONDS and PLUMES intermarried - Samuel SYMOND [married to Dorothy HARLAKENDEN] came over to New England, as did other members of Dorothy's family, Roger HARLAKENDEN and his wife, together with Rev. Thomas SHEPHARD and family came over on the Defence, one of Winthrop's fleet. In a will for William BREWSTER in 1575 he mentions property purchased of Robert PLUMME as well as his "good friend Robert PLUMME" - William's second wife was Mirabelle POTTER, daughter of John POTTER. I believe that John was the brother of Jeffrey Potter [married to Joan] and Roger POTTER [married Ann/Agnes PARKER] also brother of Edmund [often wrongly transcribed as Edw rather than Edm]. Another potential link is via BOOSBY [BUSBY] - Edmund POTTER's granddaughter Elizabeth POTTER married William BOOSBY after the death of her first husband John WARREN in 1667 [killed when William BOOSBY threw him into a vat of "scalding wart" - otherwise ale - [I'm sure it was a "love" thing] :o) Do any of the names ring any bells with any one? - Thanks Chris Wicks Braintree Essex England
Dear List, Still looking for Clarence Leslie Potter's photograph and more specific vitals (b. 1870 d. 1906). Born in Clementsport, Nova Scotia. Married twice. Potter became a gem miner in Maine and an extensive body of information is known concerning the locality he worked. Information of the Potters working iron mines in Nova Scotia is sought. Specifics of C. L. Potter are as follows: Clarence Leslie Potter (1870-1906) Clarence Leslie Potter was born in Clementsport, Nova Scotia, Canada in 1870 and died in 1906, presumably in Maine. The Nova Scotia Potter family was known for their iron mining activities in Nova Scotia. Clarence was the son of a blacksmith, Alfred Potter (b. November 4, 1836, Clementsport), and Ellen Currier Potter. Clarence Potter married Ella Sherman (b. 1868 m. d.1896) and they had three children. He married Lottie Ritchie on April 8, 1896 and had four children by her, including Francis Abbott Potter (b. December 9, 1902 d. 1903), named in honor of Hiram Francis Abbott. Clarence Potter moved to South Waterford, Maine and by 1900 was actively mining in Maine. Potter operated a mica mine in Waterford with Hollis Dunton as owner or, perhaps, partner. Sterrett (1923) noted of Waterford: "The property was opened in 1900 and was worked also in 1902 by the Beech Hill Mining Co., which subsequently sold it to New York investors." The "Beech Hill Mining Company" was probably the Oxford County Mica and Mining Company of which Potter was superintendent, however, the company has been alluded to by other names, presumably erroneously. Cole (1951) wrote obliquely of Potter and Dunton concerning the George Elliot (also known as North Rumford) Mica quarry: "The North Rumford mica mine, operated by a group of local [Rumford] and Waterford, Maine, men (with mica mining in that town. also), was first opened up during the summer months of 1900, and a large tonnage of mica was taken out." The Elliot quarry is on a low northern extension of Mount Dimmock; the summit is in Hanover, but the quarry is located to the north in Rumford. Cameron et al. (1954) wrote of the Elliot quarry: "The mine was opened for mica in 1898 by a Mr. [W. Scott] Robinson, Hartford, Maine, and is reported to have been worked in 1900 by the Consolidated Mining Co., Rumford." Although the quarry was originally opened when the land was owned by Dwight K. Elliot, George Elliot owned the land when William Bryant of Rumford Point and Fred L. Foster of Lynn, Massachusetts leased the property for mica production from 1942 to 1943. In 1900-1902, Abbott and Potter were close friends and one of Potter's sons was named Francis Abbott Potter. However, the failure of the Newry company, at least during the Dunton-Abbott-Potter partnership was due to a perceived injustice. Potter was suspected of keeping some of the money derived from the sale of gem tourmaline and Cole recited from memory of Abbott's diary (taped interview, 1958): "I've come to the conclusion that Potter is a skunk. Yes, a damned stinking skunk!" However, Cole indicated that Dunton and Potter continued to have some additional dealings in their mica mining business and it is uncertain if the monetary short-fall was not more apparent than real. Roland DeCoteau remembered (taped interview, 1958) George Howe relating an incident concerning Potter. Potter offered Howe two exceptional concentrically zoned green tourmaline crystals with large pink cores ("watermelon" tourmaline) which had been found at Newry. The crystals were described as being up to 12-15 cm in diameter and over 30 cm long. At the time, Potter's wife was receiving "treatment" at a Boston hospital. The price was $25 each, but Howe refused the magnificent specimens although he wanted them desperately. Howe felt the price was too low and, if he had taken advantage of Potter in his time of need, he might as well have "robbed" him. DeCoteau further revealed that Potter later took the specimens to Boston and Potter had to leave his heavy valise for "safe keeping" with a man he knew, who owned a pawn shop. When Potter returned, the pawn shop owner insisted that no specimens had been left with him.

I got a whole bunch of information that takes my Nicholas Potter back to Buckinghamshire, England, and that settles my question on one of my Elizabeth Potters (the one who was Nicholas's daughter and married Thomas Newhall, Jr., of Lynn, MA). But I have another Elizabeth Potter hanging out there who married a Newhall of Lynn: this one married Joseph Newhall, grandson of the aforementioned Thomas Newhall, Jr. I have nothing at all on her; no dates, no parents, no nothing except her husband. Maybe she was the daughter of Melchizedek in the Bible(?). Does anyone out there know whether she's connected to the Nicholas Potter family? She'd presumably be two generations younger than the other Elizabeth. She isn't of our direct line, so I'm not going to fall apart if she doesn't show up, but I'm still curious. Dear List, Enclosed is a short biography of C. L. Potter of Nova Scotia and Maine. If anyone can help me with this line or C. L. Potter, himself, please let me know. Would like to copy any photographs relating to him. No exact b/d dates are known for CLP. Can someone tell me if the Potter family is mentioned in the history of Londonderry Mines? The except below relates to mining in Maine.
