In my notes, I indicated that I obtained this information from a book by Jerry Alsup, ALSOP'S TABLES, VOLUME TWO, p. 379. Mr. Alsup indicates the marriage was recorded in the Douglas Register as were the births of the three children. Mr. Alsup also provides the name and address of another researcher who has done additional research on Thomas Potter: Dorian Jenkins, Everett, Washington 98203. The book was published in 1994 so the address may still be valid. There has been a mistake made by many researchers that Thomas Potter b 1746 married Susannah Shockley in Franklin Co, VA in 1801. I believe the following facts correct this erroneous assumption. The Frederick Potter Bible shows Frederick's mother was Susannah Potter, d 9 Aug 1806 57 yrs. That would make her birth date c 1749. Frederick Potter was born in 1785. Copies of this can be found in the WKU Library in Bowling Green, KY. We found two deeds, one in Henry Co. VA dated 25 Sep 1783 between Frederick Rives and wife, Mary, and Thomas Potter and wife, Susannah. Also in Franklin Co. Va. 4 Aug 1787 between the same parties. Several other deeds mentioning Thomas and other Potter in various counties in VA have been published. So far, I know of no one who has located a marriage for Thomas Potter b 1746 and Susannah ???? Also the parents of this Thomas has not been documented. However there is a deed in Pittsylvania Co, VA. dated 1 Apr 1768 between a Thomas Potter and Lewis Jenkins.... wit. Thomas Potter Junr... Thomas Potter also married Ann McGee in Barren Co. KY on 25 Sep 1808, Sec. Joshua Potter, wit. John Potter. This marriage bond is located in the Barren Co. KY Courthouse. Thomas named this Ann as his wife in his will. At the time of this second marriage, Thomas was 62 years old and we know of no children born to this marriage. Thomas and Susannah had at least 11 children as listed in his will dated 1821. The children listed were: Lewis, Elisha, Reuben, William, Benjamin, Joshua, John, Rachel, Betsy, Frederick and Nancy. I have not located any documentation as to the parentage of the Thomas Potter who married Susannah Shockley. If you would like any more specifics about this Thomas Potter or any of the documents, please e-mail me at DaleHartz@LVCM.com

The 1910 Miracode indexes the following information for each person: name, relationship to head of household, color or race, age at last birthday, marital status, visitation number or family number, place of birth, county, township, and enumeration district number. The information found here will lead researchers to the location of their ancestors in the actual 1910 U.S. Federal Census Schedules. The corresponding census images for this database will be posted within the next few months. The Miracode indexes for other states will be following in upcoming weeks. Miracode is a slightly modified version of the Soundex indexing format. Miracode and Soundex are indexes based on the pronunciation of a name, rather than the name's spelling. Surnames are coded and then arranged numerically by their codes. The Miracode system was used in 1910 only for the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia. I would love to have some nominations for the parents of Moses (c1768-1848) who m. Frances Kirby 1789 in Franklin Co. VA. The most likely so far is: Benjamin Sr. who first appears in Lincoln Co. KY 1806 with Benjamin Jr. and Thomas. The 1810 census shows four POTTERs in Lincoln Co.: Benjamin Sr. (over 45) Benjamin Jr. 26-45 Thomas 26-45 Moses 26-45 Does anyone have anything on these other POTTER families? Of these four, only Thomas appears on the Lincoln Co. 1820 census. Linda
Two widowed daughters of Joel Atkinson (d.1808 Lincoln Co. KY) married POTTERs. LEMUEL Potter married Judith (Atkinson) Stigall 3 MAR 1814 (transcription of marriage bond says "Samuel", but it's clearly Lemuel when heirs of Joel Atkinson signed deed to Thomas Potter). William POTTER m. Nancy (Atkinson) Spraggins 10 FEB 1820. Who are Lemuel and William??? There IS a POTTER / ATKINSON connection of some kind for the newly arrived Moses POTTER (c1768-1848) was chosen guardian by one of Joel's sons in 1808 and Moses' son Thomas was the highest bidder when Joel's land was auctioned c1817). What is the connection? Who is Ephraim POTTER who married Moses' daughter, Jane POTTER, 2 JUN 1822 in Jefferson Co. KY? Again, any assistance on these identities, additional information, corrections, etc. will be greatly appreciated. Linda Sparks Starr starr81@ix.netcom.com http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~lksstarr/
Based on Moses' will, marriage bonds, and other research we've put together this list of 8 children. More information or corrections on any/all of them will be greatly appreciated. 1. Jesse b. c1792 Franklin Co. VA d. bef 5 MAY 1851 Jefferson Co. KY. Per his will he did not marry. 2. Thomas b. 1793 VA d. 9 JUN 1871 (per LDS) or documented "after 1865" in Atchison Co. KS. He married Celia JACKSON 1 JAN 1816 (bond date) Lincoln Co. KY. She was the daughter of Ephraim Jackson/Nancy (Bird or Bailey or ??) 3. William b. between 1796-1800. Moses' will contains a curious statement -- "If son William dies, his share is to be equally divided among the others." Does this mean William didn't marry either? Nothing like this was mentioned under Jesse's name. Is this William, the William Potter who married Nancy (Atkinson) Spraggins, dau of Joel Atkinson d.1808 in Lincoln Co.? Is this William the one whose tombstone in Lincoln Co. KY reads: b. 2-11-1798 d. 2-13-1884? 4. Lewis b. c1799 VA d. bef 31 JAN 1848. He is probably the Lewis who married Mahala BRYANT 14 APR 1824 in Shelby Co. KY. 5. Jane b. c1804 VA. She married 1st Ephraim POTTER 2 JUN 1822 in Jefferson Co. and 2nd Thomas BRYANT 13 APR 1836 in Shelby Co. KY 6. Benjamin Franklin b. c1809 was in Floyd Co. IN on the 1850 census. He married 1st Isabel Ratcliff 5 JUN 1832 Shelby Co. KY and 2nd Malinda (Poulson) McRay 10 MAY 1848 in Clark Co. IN. 7. Henry b. c1815 d. bef 31 JAN 1848. He is probably the one who married Jane McKanna 4 JUN 1832 in Shelby Co. KY 8. Cinnatta b. between 1815-1820 d. bef 31 JAN 1848. She married (George) Washington BRYANT 13 APR 1831 in Jefferson Co. KY. Linda Sparks Starr starr81@ix.netcom.com http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~lksstarr/
Although several people have this couple as moving to Warren Co. KY, I believe they instead went to Jefferson Co. KY. Here's my reasoning: Based on several census records, the Moses POTTER in Jefferson Co. KY was born between 1765 and 1770; he names his wife "Frances" in his 31 JAN 1848 will. Frances, age 80 and born in VA, is living with their son, Jesse, on the 1850 Jefferson Co. census. Thus both THIS Moses and Frances Potter are the right age to be the same-named couple who married 14 JUL 1789 (marriage bond date) in Franklin Co. VA. And according to census records, their first "surviving" child was born c1792 in VA -- again right age of parents' marriage in 1789. That this child is named "Jesse" adds to the evidence, for the father of the Frances KIRBY in the marriage bond is Jesse Kirby -- per LDS, and backed up by Franklin Co. records which 'suggest' as much. [Frances' mother, Dicey Bartee gave permission for the marriage; the wife of Jesse Kirby was named Desre in his will -- his daughter Frances was not yet married.] POTTER children born through (c1809) per census records list VA as their birthplace. Moses first appears in Lincoln Co. KY court records DEC 1808; this is the first year he appears on the tax rolls for Lincoln Co. too. Moses continued to live in Lincoln Co. until 1820 when he appears in Jefferson Co. records. His will was probated 6 MAR 1848. Frances was still alive when their son Jesse wrote his will in MAR 1851. I'll post the children of this couple in another message for I have some specific questions about a few of them. Linda Sparks Starr starr81@ix.netcom.com http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~lksstarr/

This was posted by Sandi Gorin to the KY-BIOS list this morning. Don't know if it'll help anyone or not. Marilyn ============================== #4956: The Kentucky Explorer, Volume 9, Number 8, February 199, "Kentucky Genealogy From Dr. John J. Dickey's Diary - 1898. By permission. Perry County. John McDaniel - Benge, Ky., March 14 1898. I was born in Perry County, March 13, 1825. My father, John McDaniel was born in Buckingham Co., va. He came to Kentucky before he was married. He had 11 children: Reuben, Thomas, Heziah, Mary, Jessie, are all dead. Elizabeth Robinson, Eula, Nancy Robinson, myself and William who lives at Barbourville, are living. My great-grandfather came from Ireland. His son, Thomas, was my grandfather. He was a deaf-mute. Mymother was Judah Cornett, daughter of Nathaniel Cornett. He lived in Perry. His brother, Roger Cornett, lived at Benges. My uncle Robin Cornett, kept the toll gate which stood just east of where James Benge now lives. It was kept by Elijah McWhortr at the foot of McWhorter Hill previous to that time. I think the gate was discontinued about or during the War. In 1852 I took Bob POTTER to Mt. Vernon to school. We paid toll at a store house some 6 to 10 miles this side of Mt. Vernon, kept by a man named Smith. There were many six-horse wagons that came to Goose Creek when I was a boy, from Louisville, loaded with goods and went back loaded with salt. Robin Cornett would buy things from these wagons for people who would leave money with him for that purpose. When the K.C.R.R. reached Lexington it killed the sale trade from Central Kentucky. One was hardly out of sight of wagons those day. When I work at Gen. White's about 1843, there were 12 furnaces in operation on Goose Creek and salt was selling at 35 cents a bushel. The following persons owned or operated furnaces at that time: Alex White, above the mouth of Buzzard; Adam White, of Abington at the mouth of Buzzard; Daniel Bates, above Hortons on the west side of the creek; Gen. White, at the forks of Goos Creek; T. T. Gerrard, where it now stands, built in 1832; Daugherty and James White, on the main Goose Creek, above the forks; Frank and William White, on the same fork; Racener at D. Y. Lyttle's ford below Mancester; someone near where Garrison now lives at the ford of Little Goose Creek; Frank Clark, at the mouth of Red Bird, making a total of ten. Previous to that time there was a furnace at ford of Little Goose Creek, west of Manchester on the Burning Springs Road between James Love's house and the ford. There was once a furnace just above town at the mouth of Tanyard Branch; James Bowling was drowned in the deep well ear it called McHone hold. I worked there three months for Gen. White. I heard Dough White say in speech when running against T. T. Garrard for lower house, that he had eaten clabber out of a dish, sitting on the floor, around which were gathered his brothers and sisters, each of whom would take the spoon in turn as it was passed from one to another. (I suppose this was a little demagoguery to win votes as T. T. Garrard was born rich. J. J. D.) Water below 5 degrees is too weak to be profitable, over 12 degrees, it was not good owing to "bitter water" in it. It would also make cale salt. 9 degrees is the best head for salt, at these works. The deeper the wells were borned the stronger the brine. There was a furnace 6 miles above the mouth of Buzzard. In 1846, Dough White beat T. T. Garrard 175 votes for representative. The next race he beat him 25 votes. They then ageeed to make the race no more. I saw Dick Wyatt hunt for killing another Negro. I saw James Cottingim hung for killing Sam Chessant. I did not see Dr. Baker hung. I started to see Bill Baker hung for killing Frank Prewitt but a woman died and I had to make her coffin so could not go. I did not see Callahan and Begley hung at Barborville for killing Newberry. Callahan was son of Ned Callahan, the old settler. They killed him for his money and got 25 cents. Newberry was a cattle buyer. The murder was committed at Red Bird, a Newberry Hill. Robin Cornett and his Uncle Roger Cornett, married Charlotte and Zilpha Callahan, respectively, sisters of the man who was hung. Old Ned Callahan died at Roger Cornetts, as did his wife. Old Ned Callahan put on his shot pouch every morning as long as he lived. He would set his gun by his side. He owned Negreos. He would go out and build a fire and sleep all night in pretty weather as he did in the days of hunting. Col. Hi, Can anyone help me find any information on Andrew Jackson Potter. All i have is he was b. c.1822 in AL. and at least 2 of his children were b. there: Mary Euma Potter b. c. 1845 in AL. and John Ruben Potter b.c. 1848. Andrew moved his family to Polk County Arkansas because he is found on the 1860 census there. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Sandra
I am trying to find information on Andrew J. Potter in particular his parents and siblings. Andrew J. Potter b. 5/10/1821 in Indiana d. 6/25/1887 in Oswego, Kansas +Elizabeth Caroline Wingfield b. 2/7/1822 in NC/SC d. 8/22/1902 in Oswego, Kansas m. 1/3/1841 in Quincy, Adams County, Illinois Andrew was born in Indiana according to the 1850 Illinois census. The dwelling listed next to him was William Potter also born in Indiana. I am hoping these two are related. After most or all their children were born they left Illinois and went to Oswego, Kansas. The children I know of are Ephraim, William, Charlotte, Charles Augustus, Wiley, and possibly Ella. Any help with Andrew and where he came from would be greatly appreciated.
