Sandy and List, I don't have all, or possibly any, of the answers to Sandy's questions; but I can toss out a few more POTTERs hoping that someone can help all of us sort out the VA bunch. First let me add to Sandy's list of POTTER marriages found in the Douglas Register and/or Goochland Co. VA: >.... 2 Jurya Potter b: 1740-1745 in Virginia d: 25 June 1809 >in Knox Co., KY >........ +John Alsop b: 1723 in Virginia m: 23 March 1762 in Goochland >Co., VA d: 1807 in Knox Co., KY Father: William ALSOP Mother: >.... 2 Thomas Potter b: 26 May 1746 >........ +Diana Alsop b: Abt. 1745 in Goochland Co., VA m: 31 >July 1763 in Goochland Co., VA d: Bef. 1801 Rachel POTTER and Henry Atkinson m. 19 DEC 1756 Mildred POTTER and Samuel Emmerson m. 9 SEP 1756 Annie POTTER and Joseph Morris m. 24 MAY 1771 Judith POTTER and Philip Going m. 4 MAR 1770 Priscilla POTTER and Benjamin Salmon m. 6 AUG 1756 I can add two more POTTERs to the Goochland Co. group: 7 FEB 1746 Josias Payne sold land to Thomas Potter, infant son of John Potter dec'd. [Note, this is NOT the Thomas who m. Diana Alsop -- that Thomas wasn't born when this deed is dated.] Moving on to Henry Co. VA 1777 we have depositions from four POTTER males who gave their ages. Benjamin was 44 -- thus b. 1733; Lewis was 19 -- thus b. 1758; Thomas was 31 -- thus b. 1746 and Joseph was 30 -- thus b. 1747. I THINK the Thomas of the deposition IS the Thomas b. 26 MAY 1746. I also ASSUME that Lewis b. 1758 is the son of Benjamin b. 1733. But I may be wrong on both counts. [My question -- WHICH Thomas Potter did Diana Alsop marry? the one b. 1746 OR the son of John dec'd? I realize most people put Thomas b.1746 as her husband, but that was before this other, older Thomas was identified as a possible candidate. Just asking Dale. <g> ] Backtracking to 1755, we find *a* Lewis POTTER living on Pigg River in what was then Lunenburg Co. VA. In 1759 this same Lewis is living in what was then Halifax Co., at the juncture of Pigg River and Frying Pan Creek. I really don't think he moved, but ... This area fell into Pitts- ylvania Co. Lewis POTTER Jr. is named son-in-law of Elisha WALKER in Walker's 1764 Pittsylvania Co. will. Benjamin and Thomas Potter are on the 1767 tax list for Pittsylvania Co. In 1768 Thomas Potter Sr. sold his land on both sides Pigg River "Exceptin one Acre for a burying yard that were (sic) my Wife is now Buryed." Thomas Potter Jr. witnessed the deed. The POTTERs followed the Pigg River in a westward move into the area that became Henry Co. and then Franklin Co. when it was created from Henry. The 1786 tax list for Henry Co. includes the following POTTERs: Benjamin Sr., Benjamin Jr., Lewis and Thomas. I suspect this Thomas is Thomas Jr. of the above -- but how to prove that? By coincidence, the 1806 tax list for Lincoln Co. KY contains the following POTTER names: Benjamin Sr., Benjamin Jr. and Thomas. Lincoln Co. deeds show the wife of Benjamin Sr. is Mary and wife of Benjamin Jr. is Elizabeth. I BELIEVE the Benjamin Jr. is the one who m. Elizabeth Bolton in Pittsyl. Co. VA 15 JUN 1785. I also believe Benjamin Sr. is the Benj of the 1777 Henry Co. deposition. Now go back to the female POTTERs who m. in Goochland Co. -- both these couples are found in Lincoln Co. KY: Rachel POTTER and Henry Atkinson m. 19 DEC 1756 Mildred POTTER and Samuel Emmerson m. 9 SEP 1756 Benjamin Sr. (and Mary unless she was a 2nd or 3rd wife) had the following son proven by his marriage bond in Franklin Co. VA: Elias who m. Sarah Roach 26 NOV 1794 I think Benjamin is the father of 'my' Moses who m. Frances Kirby in 1789 in Franklin Co. KY. Moses joins Benj Sr., Benj Jr., and Thomas in Lincoln Co. KY 1808. I think the Thomas who m. Susannah Shockley 5 JAN 1801 is the son of Benj Sr. and is the one who appears in Lincoln Co. KY with his Dad and brothers. Other Franklin Co. VA marriages include: Elisha m. Judah Dalton 24 JUN 1791 -- they went to Warren Co. KY Lewis m. Nancy Hickerson 8 AUG 1786 -- they went to Warren Co. KY There is a Lewis Potter who passes through Lincoln Co. KY late 1790s on his way to Warren Co.; he is the son of Thomas b. 1746. Any comments, additions, and/or corrections will be greatly appreciated! Linda Sparks Starr starr81@ix.netcom.com

Hi everyone, I am new to this forum and my Potter line is in need of help. In my file I have a John Potter 'of Dartmouth', father of Ruth Potter. I estimate John's birth date at about 1747 and his daughter Ruth's to be about 1769. They are probably off a few years since I could find no records for either of them in the VR of Dartmouth or Westport. John may have been born in RI. I am looking for the parents and wife of John. Also looking for Ruth's birth and death information. Ruth was probably born in Dartmouth, MA. Ruth Potter married Aaron Davis. Aaron was born 25 January 1769 in Westport, MA. Aaron Davis & Ruth Potter married about August of 1789 (probably earlier than this) in Westport, MA. I don't believe this date to be correct. Aaron and Ruth had a son, Humphrey Potter Davis, and his birth date is 30 March 1789 in Westport. Humphrey died 03 January 1854 in Dartmouth. Also looking for siblings of Aaron, Ruth , Humphrey and John. Is anyone out there at all familiar with this line? I know there were many John Potter's in this particular area but I have been unable to hook this family up, and it is my feeling that the Potter dates are off. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks Pat Thayer arachne@townisp.com

I'm looking for someone who lives in or near Banks, Oregon that would be willing to look for obituarys or death records for John Charles Potter and his wife Martha T. (Herin) Potter. John was born in 1857 and Martha was born in 1859. I have a picture of them, no date of course, showing them to be quite elderly so I'm guessing they passed away sometime in the 1930's or 40's. I would guess they could be buried in Banks Cemetery. If so that would be a good source for a death date. I will be happy to reimburse anyone for their expenses but please e-mail me at jstout2@aol.com first. Thank you.
Hello, I am looking for information on the descendants of Edgar Potter, from the Plymouth area of Devon. He would have been born around 1880. His wife's name was Mary, and he had at least 4 children: Lottie, Bessie, Edgar, and Ethel. If anyone has any information on this person or knows of any of his descendants, I would be happy to hear from you. I am also looking for information on his sister, Lilian, who married a Mr. John Ackrill. She died in 1913, but I am curious as to whether or not there are any Ackrill descendants. Again, she would have been from Plymouth. Best regards, John Potter Toronto, Canada JPS2000@attcanada.ca http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/p/o/t/John-A-Potter/index.html

Hello everyone, Thought I might post my POTTER interests, just in case anyone is on the same line. All the POTTERS were prolific and had large numbers of children. My first POTTER is Jonathan. He was born in Norfolk about 1772. He married Sarah TENCH, OF Heigham, Norwich, daughter of William TENCH & Elizabeth FREEMAN. They had at least 11 children including George POTTER b 21 July 1805. George POTTER m Sarah WILLIAMS at St Peter Mancroft Church Norwich on 28 April 1828. They had at least 14 children including Richard Robert POTTER b February 1851. Richard Robert POTTER m Mary Elizabeth READ b 1861 Enfield, Middlesex, date unknown. Their children included Hilda May POTTER, my grandmother. I have pages of POTTERS, far too many to mention here. Many have involvement with the church of St Peter Mancroft - Sexton, stonemason etc. So if you think you are "Pottering about" in the same area, I'll be delighted to hear from you. Kind regards, Lynda Smith, Bedfordshire, England. .

I'm still not able to do that, but I did get some information this morning. Someone finally located my Silvester Potter in a census!!! I have attached the census information for you to look at. Apparently, my Silvester Potter was born in Missouri. He was a Railroad worker, which would explain what he was doing in Arkansas. His wife, Minnie's, family is from the Camden, Miller, Dallas County areas of Missouri.....I've always wondered what the Arkansas connection was. The age on Minnie is off a little bit.......she was born in 1888 which put her at 15 when the first child, Maude, was born. If Silvester's age is correct on here, he would have been 20 when Maude was born. I don't know if Minnie's age is the only one incorrect or not.....guess they didn't want the census taker to know whe was as young as she was when Maude was born or maybe it was because of the age difference between her and Silvester when Maude was born........regardless, this is my Silvester!! He didn't come from Mars after all!! lol Christi --------------ED4A656BA34321C0654D08A9 Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline Return-Path: <hlm@qtm.net> Delivered-To: srmcrm@onemain.com Received: (qmail 17198 invoked from network); 30 Dec 2000 08:49:15 -0000 Received: from omega.qtm.net ([216.163.32.50]) (envelope-sender <hlm@qtm.net>) by 10.209.20.32 (qmail-ldap-1.03) with SMTP for <srmcrm@onemain.com>; 30 Dec 2000 08:49:15 -0000 Received: from miller (tc-10-153.qtm.net [216.163.42.153]) by omega.qtm.net (8.9.3/8.9.3) with SMTP id DAA12570 for <srmcrm@onemain.com>; Sat, 30 Dec 2000 03:49:13 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from hlm@qtm.net) Message-Id: <1.5.4.32.20001230095435.0068a7b4@pop.qtm.net> X-Sender: hlm@pop.qtm.net X-Mailer: Windows Eudora Light Version 1.5.4 (32) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Date: Sat, 30 Dec 2000 04:54:35 -0500 To: srmcrm@onemain.com From: Harold Miller <hlm@qtm.net> Subject: Re: Wilma Mae Potter Claiborn X-Mozilla-Status2: 00000000 >Return-Path: <swbriar@bellatlantic.net> >Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2000 20:16:05 -0500 >From: Martha Kopec <swbriar@bellatlantic.net> >X-Accept-Language: en >To: Harold Miller <hlm@qtm.net> >CC: JGarr76361@aol.com >Subject: Re: Wilma Mae Potter Claiborn >References: <1.5.4.32.20001229073015.0066f62c@pop.qtm.net> > >This is the entry > >1910 U. Lynda, I would very much like to compare 'finds' of our Potter ancestors. My great grandfather, Robert Knight Potter, was born in Chatham, NY in 1811. That is as far back as I have gone. Perhaps, we might get lucky! gweimar@qwest.net Gladys
Hello Linda and POTTER List, I have not done extensive research on my Potter line in the UK and only have my ancestor of Edwin Walter POTTER born Feb 16, 1821 and whos father was listed as James POTTER. My Edwin Potter was married three times that I know of to a (1) Sarah Unknown (2) Barbara Unknown (3) Harriet Jane Blandy b. Mar 11, 1833. I show locations listed for the group as Hutfordshire, Kensington Oval, Peckham and West Brixton. I have not identified where exactly these locations are. Mr. Edwin POTTER had at least 16 children that I'm aware of as my direct ancestor was with the third wife and she died 9 months after giving birth to my ancestor. Mr. POTTER may well have gone on to marry again after her passing. If anyone would like the names of these sixteen children, I would be glad to share what I have but am hesitant to list here at this time. I would be welcome any communication regarding this POTTER line.
