Copied the following bio from the KYBIOGRAPHIES-L, posted Feb. 1, 2001 by Col. Sandi Gorin, sgorin@glasgow-ky.com: #521: Memorial Record of Western Kentucky, Lewis Publishing Company, 1904, pp 444-445 [McCracken] James Thomas Potter, one of the substantial and representative citizens of McCracken county, Kentucky, a large landowner and a successful farmer, was born November 11, 1837, in McCracken county. He is a son of James and Mary Anna (Curby) Potter, the former of whom was born in Warren county and was a son of William Potter. William Potter was a native of North Carolina, who, in 1829, settled in McCracken county, Kentucky, near Gum Springs, where he became a well known farmer. James Potter died in 1882. In politics he was a Whig in early life, but later became a Democrat. Both he and wife were consistent members of the Baptist church. She died in 1887. The children born to James Potter and wife were: William, of McCracken county; Nancy Mary, Lizzie Jane, Susan Emma, Virginia Anna and Pauline are all deceased; Samuel is a farmer of McCracken county; John H. is a resident of Tennessee; Joseph D. resides in Paducah; Laura is the wife of O. H. Oldham, a farmer of Ballard county, Kentucky; and Monroe A. is a well known farmer of McCracken county. James Thomas Potter, who completes the family, was reared and educated in his native county. In 1861 he enlisted for service during the Civil war, and continued to serve until 1865. After its close he engaged in farming for five years in Warren county, and then returned to McCracken county, where he has become one of the largest farmers and most prominent citizens. Mr. Potter owns a fine estate of five hundred acres. When he started out in life it was as a poor man, and he has accumulated a large property through his own efforts, being a self-made man in every sense of the term. In 1861 Mr. Potter married Sarah Jane Keith, who was born in Tennessee. The children born to this union are: Lee D., who is the present very efficient sheriff of McCracken county; Mary Duke, who is the wife of Edgar Sublette, a farmer in Hickman county, Kentucky; and James J. and Lena T., who reside in McCracken county. In politics our subject is Democrat. He is a member of the Baptist church at Olivet.

Hello Everyone: I referred the virus concern to the list master at Rootsweb to see if the list could be causing the virus to be spread around. Her answer is below. Everyone should be alert to attachments sent via e-mail. If they are suspicious, do not open the attachment, even if they are from a safe source. Dale Hartz List Administrator. From: "Ms. Piglet" <piglet@rootsweb.com> To: "Dale Hartz" <dalehartz@lvcm.com> Sent: Monday, January 29, 2001 6:12 AM Subject: RE: Virus No: first off, the virus cannot come thru the list. Here's how it works: on the infected person's computer, it collects addresses in incoming email, and sends itself to those addresses. So if the infected person is on a mailing list, yes, it will get all the *active* people on that list, simply because their address has been picked off their posts. As long as folks don't open attachments, *receiving* the email is no big deal (with all the folks who talk to listmaster, I average between 5-10 copies of Snowhite a day). I just delete them unopened, empty the trash, and that's all there is to it. Megan "Piglet" Zurawicz, ListPig piglet@rootsweb.com listmaster@rootsweb.com

Hello to everyone In the last month I have gotten 2 viruses delivered via e-mail. I am writing because one of them is delivered to everyone in your address book without you even knowing it. I have gotten this one in my e-mail three times. I opened it the first time and got rid of the virus A.S.A.P. I don't think it got into my address book. But someone I know has it, otherwise I would not have gotten it again. The one I got, I thought was a joke so I opened it, the attachment didn't do anything. From HaHaHa--the true story of snow white and the seven dwarfs. You can have a virus and not know it. There are anti-virus sites that offer free trials, if you want to check your computer. The one I went to was www.Antivirus.com, they have a free virus check on line. It is up to you, I am just letting you know. Hope all is well. Debbie Elam Mach3939@Netzero.net

Tom, I don't have any information on Robert Potter, however I am curious where your line is from in North Carolina. Mine are from Greene, Lenior and Johnston CO, NC not that far from Wilmington. Mine stops with John Potter in the early 1800s. Any Eastern North Carolina Potters out there? Please list your line for possible connections. Thanks, Ron Strickland
Good morning to all in POTTER land. I have been looking relentlessy for parents/ancestors/siblings of Ezra POTTER, my ggg grandfather Ezra POTTER. Ezra POTTER came to the colonies (Connecticut, before 1800) as a missionary from the Church of England. Working among the tribes, he met and married a Cherokee Indian chief's daughter and was stripped of his mission, but continued to ride from church to church on the "frontier" each week preaching. It is rumored that either previous to this time (pre 1800) or during this time, the Archbishop of Canterbury was a POTTER. The actual number of their children is not known, however it is known that there were 3 sons; Charles, Richard and Jacob. Charles married, settled in New Jersey and had 9 sons. One son Henry (from and old article in the now defunct New York NEWS) had two sons who marched up the Delaware River, under the command of Captain Jack Sullivan, to put down Indian uprisings. Richard bought land in Wayne County, PA, but nothing else is know about him. Jacob (my gg grandfather) B. 1805, settled in Lumberland, Sullivan County, NY (then part of Connecticut) and then moved to Conklin Hill, PA then part of Connecticut (across the river from Callicoon, NY). The above information brief is from Potter Genealogy, by Mildred POTTER PAZEL Jacob had three wives 1) Mildred Jane UNKNOWN BOOTH POTTER m. 1831 2) Jane REEVES WOOD POTTER, m. 1836 3) Ruth Jane LITTLE POLLOCK POTTER, m. 1854 If you have any information that might be remotely related, I would appreciate a note. Cheers and thanks in advance.

Does anyone have any info on a Robert Potter who arrived in Wilmington, NC, in approximately 1725. Perhaps one who left England at about this time. Tradition is that he was from England; however, I have no documentation on this. Thanks, Tom Potter

In my files I found a Gilbert Potter married to a Rachel Gallup - Gilbert died in 1858 so if this was a second marriage for her perhaps she was Rachel Gallup Smith??? That Gilbert Potter would be from the line of George Potter who came to RI at about the same time as Nathaniel Potter (my ancestor) and Robert Potter. Speaking of Nathaniel, I believe there was also a Gilbert Potter somewhere in that line but cannot find that one just yet. One branch of Nathaniel's family moved back and forth between Richmond, RI and Connecticut at around the time Gilbert Potter and Rachel Smith were married. I'll try to do some digging around later today to see if I can come up with anymore. For the person who was not sure where Windham is, it is a county in CT and Sterling is one of the towns within that county. I will post anything I find, Donna Potter in RI
Hello Brenda- yep 1 am here too, don't know where Windham is - I suspect England - I was hoping someone could enlighten me! What I propose is a collaborative effort, by anyone who wishes, to help figure out who this couple is & to develope a family history for them. I obtained it only because it was available & Gilbert Potter is a family name-relative I believe of my G/grandma Caroline(Potter)Stevens-don't know if this couple is even related! Anyone want to help ??? _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
