Glenna: I have a lot of information on a Potter family that lived in Clay and Platte Co, Missouri. If you would like more information on the families you find in the census records, please let me know. We have just published a genealogy on the families of the brothers: Wilson Potter, Eldridge Potter, Bentley Potter, Thomas Potter and Samuel Potter. Cindy
Does anyone have information on Potters from Maine? Specifically David Potter, possibly born 16 Nov. 1795, Sebago, Cumberland, Maine, parents David Potter and Sybil Fitch. This David could have married a Mary Ettleman in Missouri 1838 and had a son John W. born 1844 in Illinois. Anyone have information on Maine branches of Potters?
Mary, I wrote to you in the fall last year about an Andrew J. Potter whom I feel is the son of Ephraim and Nancy (Overbay) Potter. Andrew was located in Adams County, Illinois for the 1850 census, as well as his brother Ephraim Potter Jr., and then Woodford County, Illinois for the 1860 census. Andrew's first born child was a boy he named Ephraim. I don't have anything definitive that Andrew is Ephraim's son but there is a lot of circumstantial evidence which points in that direction. Andrew's death certificate indicates he was born in Indiana (unknown where). I lose Andrew after 1861, my g-g-grandfather Charles Augustus Potter was born 8/20/1861 in Barry, Pike county, Illinois. I find Andrew the next time in 1887 after his death in Labette County, Kansas. I am now trying to trace his steps from Illinois to Kansas but I haven't found him yet. Andrew had 11 children and I only have information about one and that is my direct ancestor. I hope to some day soon get to NC to check out the Potter's there and see if I can find anything. The only thing I have come up with is a possible link to PA but it is too early to tell. Any suggestions I would greatly appreciate to find past and present Potter's related to this family. Where in NE. did your Potters settle? Mine homesteaded in Phelps County, and some more went to Kearney and North Platte. Great grandfather was Albert R. Potter, son of Ephriam Potter. Albert brought his family to NE. from Woodford County, IL. I know that there are Potters in Lincoln, and some more who live up around Wahoo, NE. Ephriam was born August 24, 1796 some where in North Carolina, married Nancy Overbay in Tenn., and also lived in Harrison County, IN. Had eight children whom we can not find. Nancy died and is buried somewhere in Harrison County, IN, I think. Even Floyd County, perhaps. Ephriam married Elizabeth Hedrick in Harrison County Oct.15, 1835, and then moved to Woodford County, IL. Elizabeth was born June 3, 1817. Ephriam and Elizabeth had 10 children: Syana, Martha, Catherine, Abram, Marion, Candis, Elizabeth, Albert R., Col, T., and Frank G. Col T. died Aug. 15, 1854 age 2 years, and Catherine Horner died Oct. 31, 1866, age 29 years. As far as we know Nancy's eight went to IL. with Ephriam and Elizabeth. Ephriam's parents were Joseph Potter, born in 1769 in North Carolina and Lydia ? born ? El Paso, IL. history book says that his ancestors came from Holland in the 17th century. They are both buried in IL. Nancy and her eight children are a real puzzle. Have tried other spellings of Overbay in Tenn., and have not made any connection, and can not find anything on her eight children. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mary Berggren Fairmont, NE
Hi Ernest and Potter List! Thanks to Ernest for confirming what I was beginning to suspect! The Potters that I am researching are all over the country. The trail begins in 1910 in Washington State and goes back in time to Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Indiana, Tennessee, Kentucky, North and South Carolina, Virginia and maybe, Massachusetts. These families moved around a lot! While searching William Alonzo Wilson's family (parents William Wilson and Rachel Littlehale of Massachusetts and Maine) I am finding family in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and of course all of the Midwestern states where I have found the Potters. In all cases, I find Potter and Wilson descendants together often with the names Macomber, Littlehale (Hale or Little) West, Williams and many of my husbands associated early Rice ancestors (Axtell, Lewis, Palmer, Carson, Simmons, Stright, Barber and Williams). I am beginning to suspect that we are related back many generations and the our families have intermarried more than once!!! What this has taught me?? Keep our eyes and minds open and look for groups of names and patterns of migration. Get a map and track them with color coded pins. These people of early generations had smaller groups of people with whom to relate. They may moved often and moved as units or followed friends and relatives to the most distant places!! I thought I had no ancestors in the country past 3 generations back but I didn't know about the Wilsons and Potters and their families. Each discovery is fascinating! Even when you think you know your history from family stories, do not assume anything. My Mother was raised by her Mother's sister after her Mother died. Her father was "disowned" and the story was that he came from Germany and had no relatives in the this country. In the 1910 Iowa census, I found her father's parents! I also found that they had 7 living children!!! We were all raised in the same small town in Iowa. Where did I find Granddad?? -- Two blocks down the street from my Mother's grandparents. I know that one of my neighbors and friends was also my cousin. Scary if you think about it! I have rambled enough but I hope you gain something from my boo-boos! I am currently searching the 1860 census records from Missouri for Clay, Cass, Platte and Jackson counties. These counties are in the area surrounding Kansas City. If you think may have Potters in those counties, I would be happy to respond to reasonable requests. Thanks for all your help!! Glenna Rice

Getting old, so let me pass this along. The proof that many Potter families are related took place in the mid 1800s. Many families from various states moved to MO. This has caused confusion with some family genealogies. Creating more confusion, some returned to their original homes. In other words they didn't care for MO. This meant that children were born in various places and some closely connected families were split. So, MO is a good place to look for missing Potter relatives. If it hadn't been for a journal kept by my Potter family I would not have known. One branch was in MO for five years. Some of them remained, others returned. The name Wilson, as a given name is found in some of these families. ( ex. William Wilson Potter ). The Southern Potter families, in many cases are from the early arrival of a Potter family PRIOR to the Mayfower in VA and from land grants given after the Revolutionary War. ( other families arrived and survived much earlier then the Mayflower) Then, of course are those that are found first in N.J. In tracing those families I have found evidence that they were in contact with those in New England indicating a relationship there also. It's likely that these early families are from but a few families in England, plus one German family. My advice is to not be bound by area. These families moved around ! Also, do not restrict yourself to a state in New England. For instance, although your family is found mostly in Mass. don't hesitate to look at the other New England States. I have found the father in Conn. and the son in Mass. I've often seen postings that state, " My family was from N.Y." indicating there couldn't be a connection or, " Mine arrived in the 1700s" also indicating there couldn't be a family connection. In both cases this is usually wrong and seldom are they not connected in the early years up to 1800. There are two Web Sites ( other surnames ) that are so set on location that they are missing a rather large part of their Northern families. The Rice family is truly a large family. As per this message you can see the connection between the Alonzo family and the Potter family. Knowing that many Alonzo Potters were earliar then this one ( for instance Alonzo Potter, Bishop of Penna.) you can understand that these two families knew each other prior to these dates. Just thought I'd pass this along. I have a David Potter, born in Virginia in abt. 1820 (+/-) and can't get beyond him yet, as I have very little information Later descendents were born in Illinois, then West to Idaho. Not sure if any would have originated in New England which it sounds like much of this book covers. Maybe I'll try to find it on film or CD and check it that way. THANKS for your replies. W. Potter, written in 1888, is an excellent resource material, and has lots of good information. I've used it extensively, but, as is many times the case, is not 100% accurate. In my own POTTER line, I've found obvious (to me) discrepancies, though, not not too serious. I have a copy of this book and find it very useful. There are 10 different Potter genealogies within its' cover. Some are quite lenghthy and a couple with a few pages. My family is that of George Potter of Portsmouth, RI and is very well covered. Alot of this family migrated into the Mohawk Valley of NY in the late 1700's. If you would like, I would check to see if your family is listed. Evelyn Vohland
