This does not answer the question, but I feel that it is appropriate to post for general information about crests & coats of arms. The following two questions and answers are copied from "The College of Arms". The homepage http://www.college-of-arms.gov.uk/ says: "The College of Arms is the official repository of the coats of arms and pedigrees of English, Welsh, Northern Irish and Commonwealth families and their descendants. Its records also include official copies of the records of Ulster King of Arms the originals of which remain in Dublin." "The officers of the College, known as heralds, specialize in genealogical and heraldic work for their respective clients." From their FAQs at this page http://www.college-of-arms.gov.uk/faq.htm Q. Do coats of arms belong to surnames? A. No. There is no such thing as a 'coat of arms for a surname'. Many people of the same surname will often be entitled to completely different coats of arms, and many of that surname will be entitled to no coat of arms. Coats of arms belong to individuals. For any person to have a right to a coat of arms they must either have had it granted to them or be descended in the legitimate male line from a person to whom arms were granted or confirmed in the past. Q. What is a crest? A. It is a popular misconception that the word 'crest' describes a whole coat of arms or any heraldic device. It does not. A crest is a specific part of a full achievement of arms: the three-dimensional object placed on top of the helm. ----- Original Message ----- From: akricci@owenanalytics.com To: POTTER-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, February 01, 2002 6:44 PM Subject: Potter Family Crest This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. I believe I am descended from James and Jerusha (maiden name unknown) Turpin from the Roane Co. TN area. Jerusha was Cherokee. James and Jerusha's daughter, Elizabeth Turpin married Absalom Potter and migrated to Oklahoma Territory after their children were grown. Their 3rd son, William Potter, is my great-great grandfather. I received information on this family from a John Strunk in Harriman TN, although I have not written to him in over 3 years now. My job is to establish a concrete link with my William Potter and this family. I am very, very close to doing it, but am still plodding along on the task. I looked through the sketchy family tree supplied to me by Strunk but found no Isaac Turpin. James and Jerusha's birth years are 1807 and 1808, respectively. Their daughter, Elizabeth Turpin Potter, was born in 1836, died near Thomas OK in 1924. We might want to keep track of each other in case we find a link. Candace Sheep 2002
Forwarded from "Somebody's Links," Vol. 4, #3, 30 Jan 2002: o I have several circa 1900 cardstock photographs that have been hidden in an old trunk at my parents' house, the PARKIN homestead in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. One was of a gentleman with a long beard named Mr. HAMMOND (photographer Lothrop & Cunningham, Depot Square, Woonsocket, Rhode Island), who owned a farm on what used to be the Louisquisset Pike in North Smithfield, now 146A, and Walden F. POTTER, age 5 in 1913 in one photo, age 6 in another, a man named Fred POTTER (all from H. Desmarais, 176 Main Street, Woonsocket, Rhode Island), Mr. POTTER's sister (L. G. Moisan, New England Photo Studio). I believe the POTTER family lived around Union Square in North Smithfield. I also have pictures of relatives: Richard ASTIN (34 Broadway, Taunton, Massachusetts), Emma ASTIN with large hat, Emma ASTIN as a young woman (not a studio), Emma ASTIN as a young woman (Miller, 30 Broadway opposite P.O., Taunton, Massachusetts), Emma ASTIN's family consisting of parents, two boys, and four girls including Emma -- I believe her maiden name was PARKIN but no one seems to know -- she is just my grandfather's Cousin Emma. I also have a picture of Charlie SMITHERS, Uncle Charlie (BALDWIN)'s cousin, (Starr, 803 South Water St., New Bedford, Massachusetts) and Merrella SMITHERS (W. Kozorek, 907 Acushnet Ave., New Bedford, Massachusetts), who is in the picture with my grandmother, Ida (BALDWIN) PARKIN, and an unknown woman. If you can claim any of these pictures, I'd be glad to talk to you. Please put the surname reference in the subject line. Joyce Parkin Meleleu Please reply directly to mrnglry@earthlink.net

I have been able to establish that he died March 1901 aged 43. If my maths are correct, he was born the same year as Thomas Potter of Stourbridges son Thomas was born, is there any connection? Do you know if any of the family settled in Scotland? The 1881 Census has no record so, he must have moved at the age of 23. The address at which he lived still exists. Can you help please?

Thomas(Tom) Potter was born abt 1864 and his son Isaac R. in that census was my grandfather. Nearby, in household 201B is Richard Potter born abt 1844. In the same house is Isaac Potter age 88, so born abt 1812. I am sure the two familys are related-the elderly Isaac probably the father of Tom and Richard. If anyone has more info to share, I would be grateful. There does not seem to be much on the Georgia Potters coming through on the List. Thanks so much.
