Before that it was pretty much on the "honor system." If Aunt Bertha said she was the great-grandaughter of so and so, it was accepted. And many people were able to join simply by hooking up with Aunt Bertha's line, so the mistakes were perpetuated. I've even seen instances where a line was accepted and the "Patriot" turned out to have been a Loyalist! :-) Vickie Elam White
