    3. This is from Charles Walthall's manuscript "Burlean Hall" also known as Mount Pleasant, Kilravock Hall, Philpott-Posey House, a documented history and annotated chain of title, May 1995, available at Charles County Community College. The Original Land Grant: 2,00 Rakopakobe/Rakepakobe (no survey given) Benjamin Gill sold to ffrancis Poesey and John Bolane Survey 26 (29) August: patent 11 Sep 1650 (13). This tract is never again mentioned in the records. Francis Posey, died in 1654 and we can assume his heirs sold this patent or let it lapse. In that same year Burloin's/Burlain's Hill was surveryed for Richard True. Since that tract bears Belaine's name, it probably belonged to him previously, presumably as part of this tract. The 2,000 acres Rakopakobe possibly included (a) 1,000 acres Gill's Land surveyed 25 Oct 1649 for Benjamin Gill (14) Gill's Land is described as "lying upon Wicocomico River neare the land of James NEALE, gent, " therefore probably to the south of Arthur's Hope towards Neale's 2,000acre Wolleston Manor.. (More on Gill's land not included here) ;700 acres Arthur's/Author's Hope surveyed March 1648/49; patented 1 July 1649 for ffrancis Posey and John Burlane. (15) Survey reads: "lying on the W side of Wiccokomico River near Posey's or Neale's Creek, etc......Rent Rolls 1 and 2, 286" "This land disclaimed". 300 acres Burloin's (Burlain's) Hill(s) surveyed 24 Aug 1654; patented 13 Feb 1658/59 for Richard Trew/True; 4 May 1659 assigned to John Belaine (17. Burlean Hall was named after Burlain's Hill where it was incorrectly thought to be. Burlain's Hills can instead be traced to parts of these properties in Faulkner, MD currently known as : (a) Timberneck Farm, formerly Laurel Grove [the south 100 acres of Burlain's Hills] and (b) PEPCO Faulkner Ash Storage Site, which contains Burling's (i.e. Burlain's) Hills and Fertility Hall farms [central and north 100 acres]. The first European known to have owned Rakopakobe was Benjamin Gill, father of Ann Gill, wife of Captain James Neale of Wolleston Manor. In addition to Rakopakobe and Arthur's Hope, Francis Posey held: 100 acres "for transporting self" in 1640 ; 150 acres at Swan Point patented 1650 to Posey but assigned to Robert Robins in the same year, (19) and 450 acres Posey (also known as Bachelor) on the east side of the Potomac River, patd 1651 but assigned to Richard Watson in 1652 (20) Francis Posey was the progenitor of a large family who continued to live on his lands until the mid-20th century. . John Belaine (Belayne, Bolane, Burlane, Villaine) (d 1663), was transported to MD in 1646 by Francis Posey. . Upon Posey's death Belaine married his widow Elizabeth. (Much more property description not included here.) The 1802 map of the division of Belain Posey's estate shows that in relation to Timber Neck (there identified as the Dwelling House), Burlean Hall was located in the Widow's Dower near the south border of Mrs Philpott's Plantation. (the name of a property). The 1783 Tax List indicates a small, old house on Clare Slye's part of Walker's Run, which surely is Burlean Hall's central section--if not also the house described in 1748. Clara Slye held 150 acres or more than half of the original Walker's Run. Her dau. Jane sold it to Belain Posey. Much more eplanation, but Mr. Walthall's conclusion was "Since it is certain Burlean Hall was located within the bounds of the 1778 purchase of Clara Slye (who wold it to BelainPosey whence it passed to his widow Margaret Posey) and since only one house is described on any of Clare Slye's land, this "small dwelling--wanting repairing" (i.e. Old) must be middle section of Burlean Hall. The Poseys Return 15 May/27 May 1789 Charles Carroll of Duddington and wife Jane Slye sold to Belaine Posey 142 acres, same tracts as 1778 deed. (85) Clare Neale Slye (b 1739), desc. of Cap. James Neale (1615-1684) of Wolleston, married first Henry Brent, and second, George Slye, desc of Robert Slye (d 1670) of Bushwood and Dr. Thomas Gerrard of St. Clement's Manor. (87)........ Belaine Posey (1737-1791), a direct desc. of Francis Posey, was a captain in the Third Battalion, "Flying Camp" in the Rev. He later attained the rank of colonel in the MD militia. (89). In 1777 he married Margaret Corry, a Catholic. They lived in a house probably on Burlain's Hill called Laurel Grove during the 19th century and Timberneck since 1970. Timberneck was originally a Philpott, not a Posey, tract. Belain Posey was one of the tax assessors for Charles County who prepared the 1783 Tax List. A description of his house does not appear in the records. (90) Col Posey died in 1791 and in 1802 his estate was divided. His widow, Margaret Corry, was given the southern portion, Lot 2, the Widow's Dower, which included the land purchased from Jane Slye and Charles Carroll. She moved into Burlean Hall, named the farm Mount Pleasant and may have added the kitchen wing to the house at that time. Margaret lived there until her death in 1841. Tradition alleges that Margaret Posey, dressed in mourning attire, haunts the house--still mistress-in-charge. Shirley Davis Warren
