Hi Shirley, It's Charlotte (R-N) here. Couldn't sleep tonight, too much on my mind so I came down here to the computer. I found out something I thought was interesting in London. You know the Beauchamp family that shows up in Wood County, WVA with the Rigg and (1 or 2) Posey family members? Maybe you don't know them well but I thought you might have heard about them through Dave Rigg. Dave is related to them through Rachel Beauchamp who married Samuel Rigg, one of Charles Rigg's sons whom he is descended from. I had kind of assumed that Beauchamp was a French or Norman name. I also thought it could be a Hugenot family, as Posey might have been. In America, they pronounce Beauchamp "Beecham". I had thought that this was an Americanism that happened after they arrived. My friend Vic Belcher, tells me that Beauchamp is a common English name that is always pronounced "Beecham", as a matter of fact, many of them now spell it Beecham instead of Beauchamp and it is essentially considered the same name in England. I wonder if Posey didn't devolp the same way. Originally a French name (from whatever French source, Norman or later) that got Anglicized to Posey and then became Posey. Also, a John Beauchamp emmigrated to VA about the same time that Francis Posey emmigrated to VA (then MD). There is some belief that the VA John Beauchamp was a brother of the Edmund Beauchamp who went to the Eastern Shore (Somerset) with the Calverts. At any rate, sort of interesting that the this Beauchamp name shows up like it does. There was one of the "Potomac Barons", a Lee or a Spencer or a Fitzhugh perhaps, that mentions how much he likes the Hugenots and encouraged them to emmigrate. I'll look for the reference. At any rate, we might look into the history of the Beauchamps in England to see if we can find any clues or parallels for Posey's. Just a thought. I think that the Beauchamps are fairly well documented. Charlotte (R-N)
