I got an error message (404 page not found) when I clicked on the POSEY name. Did anyone else? Vickie Elam White
Sorry to send this to Posey-List, but quickest way to reach those of you who have subscribed to CCG. In the marriages I sent, the year in the marriage date has mysteriously changed the last two digits to 0's. Shirley

Thank you. Grandmother was a Charles County Posey and interested in ALL Charles county people (so many surnames in my family). Since one cannot send attachment to rootsweb lists I have created a web-site at My Family.com called Charles County Gleanings. I am posting scanned copies of items I have collected while researching. They are from MD Calendar of Wills, Adm Proceedings from the Perogative Court of MD, Maryland Genealogies, Early Families of Southern MD Vol IV, Charles County Land Records, Vol III, Maryland Genealogical Bulletin, and others. I have cut and pasted these bits and snippets and combined them by families (in a way). You will find a lot of Philpotts and Poseys here as well as other families somehow connected including, Courts, Cottrell, Keech, Hawkins, Smallwood, Tubman, Bayne, Warren, Barton, Smoot, Hannah, Rigg, Townley, Teares, and others. I will be adding more material as I can get it scanned and uploaded. I have uploaded four pages of items today. If you are interested in viewing this site, send me an e-mail message and I will send you an invitation to join. Shirley Davis Warren

Dear Rick, Thank you so much for that information Rick. It is always so interesting to get clues as to how to read this very florid handwriting style. Is there a web site where I can get more clues on this type of thing? Thanks again for the valuable info. Charlotte Rigg Nugent

See http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/writing.htm for exampes of 16/17 century handwriting. The 2nd and 5th capital F are like the ones the transcriber for the MD Archives series read as a small double f. Notice not only the difference in formation, but in the comparative size of the capital to the small letter. Notice the 6th capital P. This is a very common form in the early MD records, with the bottom of the P extending below the line, and the top of the P going to full height (as an h or l). A small p (as the first one there) would only go to half the height of capital P, otherwise very similar looking to the capital P. Rick Saunders

Just curious. That's due to the way old writing was done. The lower-case "s" looked like an "f" so to make sure folks knew that what looked like an "f" was really an "f" they used the double "f" for it. When transcribing into modern documents, the double "f" really shouldn't be used but people do it anyway. They do the same thing with "ye" -- the "y" there isn't really a "y" it is a combination letter called a thorn which stood for "th." Vickie Elam White
Charlotte asked: Anyone have a clue why they spell his name "ffrancis posey" in lower case and with the first "f" doubled so often? Just curious. ================================================= Hi Charlotte, In 16th and 17th century English handwriting, the method of making a capital F resembles what modern readers interpret as a small double ff. In the mind of the person writing the record, the symbol they were making was a capital F not a small double ff. Some writers also had a method of making a capital P, where the bottom of the P went below the line, there being only a very small difference in appearance from their small p. The difference was usually in the ornateness of the beginning of the letter. In the minds of modern readers, any p which goes below the line is a small p.
