Hi JH! If James' father's name was James, also, he would be considered head of household. My family is white. Thanks for offering to look up James. Peggy
By 1830 my James was living in Illinois. He was also white, so it is doubtful that we are looking at the same James Posey. When my husband checked the m.f. reel, it was for a free man of color, so he didn't write anymore. It's funny that yours is the first email I opened tonight. We were just talking about this James and the note my husband made on the paper. If your family is black, I will be glad to look James back up tomorrow at the library and answer your question. Let me know. You know, the James you're looking for would've only been 14 in 1830. Would they have listed him, at that age, as head of household? J.H.

Hi J.H., The RootsWeb WorldConnect Board at: http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/p/o/POSEY/ is just what your looking for. You can post info to categories like Bible Records, Bios, Deeds, Obits, Pensions and Wills. It's unfortunate that they don't have any categories for Vital Records or Census information, but I think you could get around that by posting that kind of info in a message on the Query Board. If after checking this out and you decide that a web page would be a better way for you to go then you should check out RootsWeb Home page at: http://www.rootsweb.com/ A little over half the way down the page you'll see the heading "Web Sites", click on "Request for a Web Space Account". Don't let the word "Account" throw you, it's free and you get an unlimited amount of space. I'm glad that you thought to post this information on the web rather then just discarding it. Jim Esims4@aol.com wrote: > > Can you tell me where I might post the information I've collected while > searching for my Posey line? I had no problem - please cut and paste. Cliff Posey
I too could not get your web page using the url in your message. I even inserted www. in it to no avail. Now I just tried "copy and paste" with the same results. There must be some minor discrepancy that has crept in.
It is much easier to "cut and paste" an url than to type it in accurately. Cutting and pasting is how I put the url into the e-mail in the first place. Try again - it's there. Messages to the list are stored in the POSEY-L archives on Rootsweb. There is a lot of wonderful information in the archives and easy to search. I search each surname list by the given names in my family and locations. For example, for the POSEY-L, I might type in Zachariah for a list of all entries that mention someone by the name of Zachariah. I might also type in Edgefield, for all Edgefield entries. (My Zachariah Posey lived in Edgefield Co., SC.) By posting to the list, it should always be available through the archives and easily available to all who are currently on the list. Of course, posting it on a website is great too. My Posey page is given below. Hope this helps. The various articles that I've seen on the life of the Rev. Humphrey Posey have all been based on a biography published in 1852 by the Western Baptist Association of Georgia, about six years after the time of his death, 28 Dec 1846, in Newnan, Georgia. The book is entitled "Sketch of the Life of Elder Humphrey Posey", by Robert Fleming of Newnan, Georgia. There is copy of this book in the special collections the Woodruff Library at Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia. The book does not name any of Posey's ten children. It does report the date and place of his birth -- 12 Jan 1780, in Henry County, Virginia -- and the date and place of his marriage to Lettice Jolly -- 28 Jan 1800, in Union District, South Carolina. From various sources, I had gleaned the names of seven of those children, though I cannot say that I have found positive documentation for any of them. The daughter Cecilia Victoria Posey named by Joe Crouse is new to me, so that would bring the number to eight. I believe that the first child was a daughter her died young, perhaps in infancy, and who may not have been given a name. The names of the other seven probable children are as follows: 1. Sarah Posey, b. abt. 1804, prob. in Buncombe County, NC; m. Joseph Edgar Early, in NC; he was b. 1803, NC. They had eight children, and lived in Floyd County, GA (bef. 1841) and Itawamba County, MS (bef. 1851). Several of their children removed to TX. 2. Mary Posey, b. 12 Jun 1806, prob. in Buncombe County, NC; d. 15 Jan 1807. 3. Margaret A Posey, b. abt 1808, prob. in Buncombe County, NC; m. Pleasant Hearst. 4. Humphrey Posey, Jr, b. abt. 1810, prob. in Buncombe County, NC; d. bet. 1843 - 1857, prob. in Henderson County, NC; believed m. Sarah Ann Edney, daughter of the Rev. Asa Quincy Edney and Sarah Mills, of Henderson County, NC; she was b. abt. 1816, in Edneyville, Buncombe (later Henderson) County, NC, and d. 1840, in Henderson County, NC. Documents relating to the estate of her father Asa Quincy Edney name her husband Humphrey Posey, and also name Benjamin F. Posey (probably the uncle of Humphrey Posey, Jr, who lived in Buncombe County, NC) as the guardian of their three minor children, also named, viz., John, William, and Benjamin Columbus. 5. Rebecca Posey, b. 1812, prob. in Buncombe County, NC; m. Robert Caler, in 1832, prob. in GA. 6. James D Posey, b. 15 Mar 1813, prob. in Buncombe County, NC; d. 28 Mar 1903, prob. in Fayette County, GA; bur. Brooks, GA in County Line Christian Church cemetery (near Fayette & Spalding County Line); m. Elizabeth Ann ?, b. 3 Nov 1822, d. 4 Apr 1822, also bur. Brooks, GA in County Line Christian Church cemetery. He was identified as son of the Rev. Humphrey Posey by 2nd great grandson John Spencer Posey Woods, in "Posey Family in America" by Lloyd Franklin Posey and Betty Sue Drake Posey. They had three known children, two of whom are also buried in same cemetery as their parents. 7. William Kimsey Posey, b. 1815, prob. in Buncombe County, NC; m. (1) 1840, prob. in GA, to Mary Quinn, and (2) abt. 1849, also prob. in GA, to Elizabeth Ann ?, b. 1818. William and Mary Quinn had three known children; unknown whether he and Elizabeth Ann had any children. He was listed as a tutor on the first faculty of Mercer University, Macon, Georgia; he was kept a hotel. Lettice Jolly Posey died 22 Jun 1842, in Walker County, GA, after which the Rev. Humphrey Posey married Mrs. Jane Stokes, widow of William M. Stokes, 28 Jul 1844, in Newnan, Coweta County, Georgia; some sources have reported that her maiden name was Strong. They had no children. The Rev. Humphrey Posey died 28 Dec 1846, in Newnan, Coweta County, GA, and is buried near there. I would be very much interested to learn any additional information about any of the descendants of the Rev. Humphrey Posey. I would be especially interested to learn whether anyone has confirming documentation about any of the children listed above. Rev. Richard M.
