3. Greetings Posey researchers! We have a new addition to our Posey Genealogy Links page - it is called "This 'n That". It contains census records for Tennessee, Kentucky, and Missouri as well as some other items of interest. The information was generously provided by our own "JH" so that his hard work could benefit others. Take a look - you may find a clue that will help you! AOL Posey Genealogy Links or http://home.att.net/~wab222/ If you wish to share with others tidbits of information that you have found, please do so - a link is provided on the page. Due to copyright laws, it is only possible to include information that has come from public records. Also, please remember that our Genealogy Links page is just a part of the big picture. You can always post Bible records, Biographies, Deeds, Obituaries, Pensions, and Wills on the GenConnect Boards at: AOL: GenConnect at Rootsweb or http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/p/o/POSEY/ These boards are the puzzle pieces located toward the bottom of this webpage. This is a wonderful list and by continuing to help one another, we will all benefit. Thanks! Winnie Brooks POSEY surname list coordinator

1. [POSEY-L] Posey-Maddox/ Madox
2. Fredric Z. Saunders
3. Hi, In my study of the POSEY family I would like to correctly identify the husband of Frances MADOX, named as a daughter of John POSEY in his 1759 Charles County will. Rather than reinvent the wheel, has someone studied this, and can they provide reference to source documents showing the indentity of her husband? Unfortunately the archived rootsweb lists appear to still be down that I can not see if this had been discussed before. Published records have two different opinions: 1. James Wade Emison stated she married Thomas MADDOX, son of Benajmin MADDOX (who died testate 1771) and Frances (WHEELER?). He listed no source, but did note that the children of Benjamin and Frances were very similar to the names of the children of John POSEY [that died 1759]. 2. Elise Jourdan in "Early Families of Southern Maryland" 5: 43 states she is the Frances, wife of the above Benjamin MADOX who died in 1771. In 1740, John POSEY and wife Lydia in two deeds sold "Horn Fair" and "Poseys Chance" to Benjamin MADDOX and wife Frances and to the heirs of Frances lawfully begotten. (Charles County land records O2: 343-346, FHL microfilm 013745) Can someone provide documentation that Benjamin MADDOX's wife Frances was a WHEELER? If so, did Benjamin MADDOX have two marriages, the second being Frances POSEY whom he married ca. 1740? Is there documentation that John POSEY's daughter Frances married Thomas MADDOX? When were the children of Benjamin MADDOX born? I have seen estimates on-line of anywhere from the 1720s to the 1750s. Rick Saunders

1. [POSEY-L] James D. Posey
2. I am looking for the ancestors of James D. POSEY. He was born March 22, 1828 in SC (birthplace according to census records). He married Mary Frances HAMILTON sometime after 1850 in GA. Both Mary and James are buried in Nances Creek Cemetery, Calhoun Co., AL. He died Dec 15, 1873 and she died Oct 9, 1886. Also in Nances Creek Cemetery is John A. POSEY, born June 22, 1820 and died May 2, 1884. Could they be brothers? I have lots of information about the descendants of James and Mary and am willing to share and compare. Thanks for your time! Susan Law Fann (in Piedmont, AL)

He was an older barother of Bennett Posey; they were of Scotch descent; landed in Savannah, GA. Possibly father or grandfatehr of Chesley Posey (born 1827) who was age 23 in 1850 in Talbot Co., GA. Is supposed to have had a son named Abraham or Abram. And then on a younger Abraham: he was born ca. 1831 and daughter Ellen (born ca. 1855) were living in Talbot Co., GA on the 1860 census. Possibly he was a son of the immigrant, Abraham or Abram Posey. This is certainly not much to go on, but perhaps provides some clues you can follow up on. 2. Kurt Pickering
3. Hey, Rick and Ginnie, et. al., Your messages make me wonder if y'all's stuff might contain the solution to a great-great-great mystery in my line. Hiram Pickering, my great-great-great grandfather, lived all or most of his life in Hampshire County, VA - which is now of course in West Virginia (Romney is the county seat and only city of any size). It was in that county that a March 17, 1828, marriage bond indicates Hiram was about to marry Sarah Ann POSEY. I've never found a record of the marriage - which I understand is not all that unusual, and that it doesn't mean they didn't marry. For one thing, that's a border county a generation before the Civil War - and a lot of records were lost in that War. For another, it was a time when the keeping of such records was gradually moving from the churches to the civil arena - and there were bound to be gaps during such an evolution. Two later census references, however, give Hiram's wife's name as Sophia, with both saying she was a Maryland native. Hmm. I've worked as if Sophia was a different wife but always kinda wondered if Sophia might have been a nickname, or maybe a pet name, for Sarah. Now, if Sarah or her family were from Maryland, and if your Poseys from Maryland were in (now West) Virginia in the 1820s - gotta ask if either of you has a Sarah Ann or a Sophia, contemporary to Hiram, who was born about 1803, in your database. Yep, my fingers are crossed! Researching these 8 greats: Pickering-Snyder-Roach-Teegardin-Hodges-Evans-Kantner-Shifflet + these contributing Pickering/Snyder lines: Orndorff-Kinsey-Beall And, of course, many more!
