    1. [POORHOUSES] Greetinjgs
    2. Dittmar, Frederick M.
    3. Good Day and Greetings to all (232) POORHOUSE mail list members. As the new list administrator I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Frederick Dittmar and I've been involved with genealogy on the internet since 1990. I'm a member of 5 local genealogy societies and APG, Association of Professional Genealogy. As you can below I have 99 mail lists (some active and some not) I'm subscribed to a total of 157 lists. My surnames are - DITTMAR / BAGEN / ELLIS / HEMMERLY + in the Plymouth Massachusetts area and MORGAN / SIMPSON from MS / TX / OKLAHOMA. >From reading the archives, I'm happy to see that this list is quite active and people are being polite and helpful to each others. My wish is that more posting would come directly rather then through the gateway board. But that's just me not a requirement. Please when posting a request for information on a Poorhouse you include the Name, Town, County, State or Country if known. It might help another subscribers memory connect, I know I need all the help and direction I can obtain. POOR HOUSES came by many names. Remember the times and don't be offended by some of the names. Here are a few that might help in your search: POOR FARM, WORKHOUSE, SANITARIUM, LUNATIC ASYLUM, CHARITIES INSTITUTION, ALMSHOUSE, ASYLUM for the INSANE, HOSPITAL for the INCURABLES, PAUPERS, ORPHANAGES, INFIRMARY and others. Does any one have another name they could add? Here is a link that might help with names and meanings of names. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poorhouse I remember growing up, when I started doing genealogy I came across a name of a great aunt. Upon asking my mother and grandmother both told me to not follow that lead and not talk about her. Later I found that she had been 'committed' to a 'sanitarium' she had tuberculosis, consumption all hush hush at the time. If I can be of any help or assistance in giving anyone direction please feel free to write. Thank you and Greetings again. Fred Frederick M. Dittmar Diggin' Deep Genealogy Research Service PO Box 2601 Norman, Oklahoma 73070 Associate Board Member - Oklahoma Genealogical Society - http://www.okgensoc.org/ Board Member - OKOLHA - http://www.okolha.net<http://www.okolha.net/> Member: APG - Association of Professional Genealogist - http://apgen.org<http://apgen.org/> List Administrator for 99 mail lists. 32 State-Ghost Towns / 21 Oklahoma- / 13 Family Surnames / 12 Miscellaneous / 8 Canadian & 12 Province & Territories Ghost Towns lists.

Author: gracekin Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.institutions.poorhouses.general/106.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thank you for your reply. Yes, I know this is going to be difficult. What I am trying to do is find the identity of my grandmother's 1/2 sister. My great grandmother was Lena Hansen and her husband was Jacob Hansen and they had a daughter (unknown). Through help I received on another board, a 1900 census was found for Lena Hansen & daughter, 10 month old "Agnes" listed as "patients" at Blackwells Island. This is the only record found for a Lena Hansen in the 1900's in the New York/New Jersey area and her age and birth place match. I want to believe it is her but I thought that seeing the "intake" records would confirm it for me. Do you think that it would be any easier to obtain records for the child Agnes? If only it would confirm the fathers name, I would feel more confident that this is indeed them. Can you tell me of your experience getting copies of the microfilms? Is it very costly? If I don't know whether they were in the hospital, poorhouse, charity or workhouse do they offer a service to research? Thank you so very much for any help you can give me. and Happy New Year! They have a notebook that acts as an index to its microfilmed records titled "Almshouse" 1758- 1953." I have used this resource, and it is difficult to use as you need to know if your ancestor was in the hospital, poorhouse, charity, or workshouse to idntify the correct film. Winifred Frances Parkes B 14/10/1917 to Sarah Elizabeth Parkes. She resided at 1 Western Road. After doing some research on the net, I have found out that this was the Birmingham Union Workhouse. Does any one know how I can find out about the people in the work house. We would love to be able to find out information about Sarah and why she was there. Apparently at the time of the birth of Winifred, Sarah was a Munition Worker. Can anyone help me find any more information?
