I can imagine that Robert may have been living with the farmer in Gibsmere, but possibly visiting another family in Southwell to see his mother perhaps, but I don't have anything to base it on. There don't appear to be any birth or death records for another Robert Briggs around that time in Nottinghamshire, and no other census entries either. It's a tricky one. We did enjoy the work house trip and the audio was good. Seems less exciting now I know Elizabeth wasn't there! You seem to know a lot about the census, do you think then that the 2 9 year old Roberts could be the same? Don't suppose I'll be able to prove it for definate though julia Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: BelleRinger Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.institutions.poorhouses.general/110.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: You're welcome Julia, and I've found Robert OK using the reference you've given. It did happen that the same person could be enumerated at two different addresses, just as it was possible in the most recent UK census to record yourself living at your permanent address, but if you were staying somewhere else you had to record yourself as a visitor there too. I have the Notts Family History Society baptism CD and it's interesting that although Robert Briggs' baptism was at Bleasby, his and Elizabeth's abode was Gibsmere, which is where he was in 1841 on the census image you've given me the reference for. It looks as if the facts, such as you have them, do tie up. I think that 'inmate' does just mean that Robert was living in that dwelling with other people - it's a fairly archaic term. By the way, did you enjoy looking round the workhouse? Fascinating place, especially with the audio tour. :-) Christine Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: sajlbriggs Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.institutions.poorhouses.general/110.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello Christine, Thanks for your reply. I had been convinced she was in the workhouse but after dragging the family round southwell workhouse yesterday I began to realise that it didn't seem right! I wonder if you would be able to have a look at the Robert on the 1841 census that I think is her son and see what yout think to the inmate. I'm not sure if I'm giving the reference right but I think this is it Class: HO107; Piece 865; Book: 15; Civil Parish: Bleasby; County: Nottinghamshire; Enumeration District: 17; Folio: ; Page: 1; Line: 10; GSU roll: 438908. Also do you know if a person could be entered twice on the same census by mistake? As the above Robert is 9 and living with the farmer but there is also another Robert Briggs aged nine as a lodger in the same area, appearing to be in a house on his own. This doesn't match up on the 1851. I'm beginning to doubt all my research now!My definate facts were single Elizabeth Briggs had Robert Briggs in 1832 in Bleasby and I pieced the rest together or so I thought! Thanks, Christine for the reply Julia Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: BelleRinger Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.institutions.poorhouses.general/110.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hundreds (or wapentakes) were an ancient division of land, and it was thought that they were so named because they could support 100 armed men. The Thurgarton hundred was one of 6 in the county of Nottingham, the others being Bassetlaw, Broxtowe, Newark, Bingham and Rushcliffe - some of these are now the names of District Councils within Nottinghamshire today. If a hundred was large, it would be split into divisions, and Thurgarton was split into a North and South Division, with Southwell Division in between. You're right in thinking that Elizabeth wasn't living in the workhouse on the 1841 census, and Westgate was (and still is) a well-to-do area. The letters next to Elizabeth's name are F.S. which stand for Female Servant. It's possible that the word inmate next to Elizabeth's son's name just means that he was literally living with another person - difficult to tell without seeing the image. Author: sajlbriggs Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.institutions.poorhouses.general/110/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have an Elizabeth Briggs born 1801 in my family tree, who I found in the 1841 census listed as living at the above with 9 other people. Her 9 year old son on the same census is living with a farmer and his profession says inmate next to it. I assumed they were both from the southwell work house but now am having my doubts . Mainly because when I look at the top of the census page it appears to say westgate and there is big family listed above the 9 people that Elizabeth is with . Both of which don't really tie up with being in a workhouse. Also I don't understand what the letters are in the profession column next to Elizabeth's name. Can someone tell me what the thurgarton one hundred southwell division is please? HO107/867/13 - I think this is the reference for the page. 1. [POORHOUSES] Workhouse in Cambridge, Cambs, UK 1840-1850
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: colinclarke1945 Surnames: CLARKE Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.institutions.poorhouses.general/109/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have an 1851 Cambridge County Gaol prison record that shows a 19 yrs old inmate, Richard CLARKE, was previously: Quote "twice summarily convicted of misconduct in a workhouse". Unquote Based on dates and age 18/19 when in the County Gaol, I would think these acts of misconduct probably happened in the workhouse quite a bit earlier - maybe even in the late 1840s. First question: At what ages did boys start in the workhouse, and leave the workhouse? Were there set ages? I know this Richard CLARKE was living with his mother during the 1841 census (the aged about 10). His mother died 1845, (no father) so my guess is he went to the workhouse sometime after this date. Perhaps. Second question: If this man lived in Fulbourn, just outside of Cambridge, Cambs, what workhouse would he likely have been assigned to, and do searchable records exist regarding the occupants, and the punishments etc. Thanks for reading.
