Death certificates usually include the name of the burial cemetery on the bottom left. Families often reclaimed their kin and buried them in family plots off the island. BTW, Ellis Island, the port of Immigration into NYC harbor beginning in 1898, has nothing to do with burials on Blackwells aka Welefare aka Roosevelt Island. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: greylyla Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.institutions.poorhouses.general/113/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My Ancester, was Kate Cummings, and she is listed in the workhouse of Devizes, Wiltshire in the 1881 census, along with her sister MArtha Cummings (age 6) and brother William Cummings (age 22.) William is listed as "idiot from birth" (which was previously unmentioned in the other censuses.) Are there any records available which might suggest why these children (Kate and Martha) were submitted to the workhouse, while their other siblings were able to stay with their mother, their father being deceased? any help would be greatly appreciated! 3. ah - that is THE question! and if you/we knew, we'd solve a huge mystery surrounding many people in the past poorhouses! My first thought would be that since they labeled him as *idiot*, perhaps the others were labeled too - sometimes the census worker did not write them down. Also, the fact that he was 22, he could go to work for someone, whereas children were apprenticed out when someone wanted an extra hand around the home/farm, etc. [boys more so than girls]. Perhaps the mother couldn't keep all the children in her care when she was widowed; it sounds harsh to us now, but back then I guess they had to do what they could to survivie. Your best source would be to check with the local historian from the area of the poorhouse - they will have records that may shed more light on their situation [registration book, forms, inventory of their goods, perhaps letters, etc.]. I did a book about one of the former poorhouses of western NY, and reading some of the records of the facility were amazing - how terrible some were treated, while others appeared to be doing well. Good luck in your researching! : )Linda ----- Original Message ----- From: <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> To: <POORHOUSES-L@rootsweb.com> > > My Ancester, was Kate Cummings, and she is listed in the workhouse of > Devizes, Wiltshire in the 1881 census, along with her sister MArtha > Cummings (age 6) and brother William Cummings (age 22.) > > William is listed as "idiot from birth" (which was previously unmentioned > in the other censuses.) Author: willieteresamca Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.institutions.poorhouses.general/102.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Sharon, my name is Willie Mcallister from Newry. In attempting to do my family history I discovered that my Great Grandmother died in Dundalk Workhouse at the age of 35, 4 months after giving birth to twin boys, one of which died hours after birth. It appears that she was deserted by her husband sometime around summer of 1900. he had been a soldier and hourse trainer. It's a long ans sad story which is still only becoming clearer. In attempting to get records from the then workhouse, i discover that a decision was taken by the Dundalk Council around the time the state was being established, to distroy all Workhouse records on the basis that noone would ever want to know that a relative was ever an inmate. Such a pity. Hope this is of help. Willie Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. It also means I can't gain information about them as they are not direct descendants and it is unlikely that the information will be available though Ancestry if the company itself requires such a high cost to search for information. I was able to see it and it confirms what I suspected. I believe her brothers may be have been moved to 18 Stepney Causeway run by Dr. Barnardo. I found possible records of them arriving in Canada years after their sister in separate groups run by this man. It seems possible since this location would have been around the corner from Limehouse so when it closed they may have been moved there when Elizabeth was sent to South Metropolitan district school in Banstead.
