Unfortunately poorhouses were often places people went if they were deemed mentally ill or very sick. I have seen in some records where women were put into these places for menopause! My GGG grandfather died in a poorhouse fire. He was in the asylum portion of the building. He was in his 80 s and I'm sure the main reason he was there was because of his health and age.
