    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: robertkballard Surnames: Ballard Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.institutions.poorhouses.general/130/mb.ashx Message Board Post: In reseraching my ancestors, the 1911 Census shows a Kate Victoria Ballard, born Portsmouth 1880, as an inmate of the Edmonton Union Workhouse. Can anyone inform me who her parents are and when she entered the Workhouse? Both her parents died in 1907 so its possible that this is Victoria Kate Ballard. My last record of her was with her parents in Portsmouth in 1901. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: halpark Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.institutions.poorhouses.general/129.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The answer to your question about inmates being included in the Census, the answer is "Yes". Everybody was supposed to be entered wherever they were that night - hospitals, ships, the lot. However to go further. You "have been told" he was "put in an orphanage" and understand his father had been lost at sea. Have you thought of trying the Liverpool Seamen's Orphanage? Author: sjheathcote1 Surnames: Jones Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.institutions.poorhouses.general/129/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi everyone. I wonder if anyone can help. I have the death certificate for my husband's great grandmother and it says she died in Liverpool workhouse in 1910. My husband's grandfather was only 4 at the time and I believe his father had already lost his life at sea. Would the 4 year old boy have stayed in the workhouse? We have been told by relatives that he was put in an orphanage when his mother died. Thing is, I just can't find him on the 1911 census. Were inmates of workhouses included on the census? They aren't easy to research as the surname is Jones! If anyone can help much appreciated. Thanks Sarah Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. GILSHERE Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.institutions.poorhouses.general/127/mb.ashx Message Board Post: In August 1852, the SS Great Britain sailed from Liverpool to Melbourne on her first Australian voyage. As part of her leaving celebrations, a band from the Industrial School played onboard. According to one newspaper report, some of these boys 'sailed with the ship'. On the Crew List, there are 4 'Boys' from Liverpool aged from 12 to 16. One of these, Daniel GILSHERE appears at the Industrial Schol in the 1851 census as Daniel GILSHIRE. I can find no other trace of him either in Liverpool or Australia. Does anyone have any information about Daniel or about the this group of boys in general? Was it common for Boys from the School to be 'emigrated' in this way? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: 1_johnwil Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.institutions.poorhouses.general/126.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thanks Fred, but I have her fairly well documented throughout her life in the US, the US 1920 Census has her in service in/on Fifth Ave NY. In 1930 she has made her way to California, where she stayed until her death. Its the beginning of her life that is the mystery, and quite who her father really was. I have a possible baptism entry,(in Norfolk England) which just gives her mother as a 'single woman from the Wortwell workhouse'. Clues from the US Census' and Ellis Island records,(the given place of birth) point to this being her, but I still have a small doubt, and I'm a stickler for getting it right!! Author: 1_johnwil Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.institutions.poorhouses.general/126.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: No, she didn't die, (the younger daughter) because I have her turning up on the 1901 Census and she emigrated to the US around 1912 (ish), going into service there with some fairly well known families. I suspect that the two daughters are possibly with another family, but I'm blowed if I can find them anywhere on the 1891 Census. She was born in strange circumstances, 3 years after the death of her mothers husband (father to her siblings) - her mother had not remarried, nor did she seem to have 'a man' in tow. I'll send you a message directly Janice, with the full details. Cheers, Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [POORHOUSES] Scottish Poorhouse Records
    2. Alberta
    3. I am looking for information about Poorhouses, particularly those in operation in Glasgow, Scotland from 1875-1895. Are the records of admission/discharge available and if so, what information on residents is noted. Were families separated on admission? Where are these records housed and are they accessible? Any information/direction would be appreciated.

Author: 1_johnwil Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.institutions.poorhouses.general/126/mb.ashx Message Board Post: A general question - would daughters be 'taken away' from the rest of their families in the workhouse? We have an ancestor in the Depwade Union Workhouse, Norfolk on the 1891 census, a widow with her 3 sons aged 12, 10 and 9. Her two daughters aged 13 and 7 are nowhere to be found. At age 13, the older one may have been put out to 'service', but I can't find her - and I have searched widely. Any thoughts anyone? Author: mizgayle Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.institutions.poorhouses.general/125.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Many thank you's Janice. In fact my G/Grandmothers sister was admitted at the same time. Here are their details : Ellen & Margaret Cunningham admitted 1883, Ellen aged 7, Margaret aged 4. Documentation says Ellen was apprenticed to the Asylum at age 12, Margaret age 15. My G/Grandmother Ellen gave birth to boy named Wallace Norman Cunningham on 23 Dec 1893, Ellen would have been 17. Seeing as neither Ellen or Margaret ever married I'm assuming they both stayed at the Asylum till their apprenticeship was over at age 19. This year I travelled from Darwin to Sydney, spent a week researching, found their admission details, unfortunately it was a dead end from then on.
