You also might write to a historical society or news paper to see who owned the hardware store. If he was adopted, the birth cert will have the adoptive parents name. 1. [POORHOUSES] Would paupers homes or almshouses equate to jails in 1910 Illinois?
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: cwright1126 Surnames: Wright Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.institutions.poorhouses.general/132/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My family knows next to nothing about my grandfather's early life. He was born in 1905 in Illinois. Beyond that when the topic came up grandfather would only say he had rough childhood and hinted that his father had died when he was very young. My grandfather's name was John Wright, so one can imagine this relatively common name means he is difficult to track down. I don't know if I could be my grandfather, but I found a 5 yr-old John Wright in a 1910 census (Mt Vernon, IL). He and several other children, and adults, were listed as inmates in jail. How did that work? Why would a 5 yr old be a jail inmate? No other 'inmates' were named Wright. Any information would be interesting to learn. Author: ab180799 Surnames: Hyde Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.institutions.poorhouses.general/131/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello, Would it have been normal practice for the Master of the Workhouse to have registered the birth of a child born there? My great grandmother's (Marion Hyde) birth certificate states she was born at 1 Sutton Road in 1905 and was registered by a Thomas D Rollinson (Occupier), on looking up this name on the 1901 census I found that he was master of the Kidderminster Workhouse at 1 Sutton Road. On the certificate the date of birth, place of birth, mother's name and occupation are all that are recorded. It is not usual practice I was wondering if it is because the mother, Olive Hyde, died. The only information I have on her existance is what's on the certificate, since she does not appear with Marion in the 1911 census. Author: kunochione Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.institutions.poorhouses.general/126.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: A historical society worker told me recently that often, in general in the 1800's, if the mom became ill or passed then sometimes the father would not be granted guardianship and just the children could end up in a poorhouse. But check with aunts, uncles, and grandparents. Perhaps someone in the family thought is not proper for girls to be in the poorhouse, with such bad conditions. The idea that is they were working with a family, too, a possible husband might be found to alleviate the girl's situations? Just a thought.
