    1. [POOLEY] Notice about Rootsweb Lists
    2. Jim Jackson
    3. This has been received from the Rootsweb administration: "Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails." We are presently setting up email groups at https://groups.io/. If there is interest in migrating this list to groups.io please respond to this message to that effect ASAP. Please have patience about the creation of your group. The response has been tremendous and it is taking time to get them all set up. Also, creation of this group will depend upon your response to this missive. With heavy hearts, Jim and Di

    1. [POOLEY] Help Keep This List Active
    2. Jim Jackson
    3. We just wanted to encourage you all to make use of this list in your family searches. A large number of Rootsweb lists have been made inactive due to no messages over a period of time. We want to keep as many lists active as we possibly can and your participation will help toward that goal. If you have a "brick wall" in your family search, send in a message to the list address with as much information as you have and let's see if someone may be able to help fill in those blanks. Best wishes, Jim and Di

    2. Nancy
    3. And nice saying hello to  you also!  I am Nancy, married to Dr Robert Pooley, MD since 1961.  We live in SW Virginia, on Smith Mountain Lake.  He is a retired pathologist.  His roots go back to Norfolk Co, England - Wolferton, Kings Lynn, , perhaps into Cornwall., also.  His immigrant grandfather was George Francis b London 1862, a trombone player in NY.  Those roots go to North Runcton, Norfolk.  Your Mum was probably correct in that Pooley was a bit Northern name.  I'm digging into the 1700's records- however I don't see an immediate connetion.  Perhaps???  Keep in touch-enjoyed our contact!  Nancy Ogle (Northumberland) Pooley. -----Original Message----- From: Gary sismey <gazzaman5566@gmail.com> To: pooley <pooley@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thu, Jun 13, 2019 7:09 pm Subject: [POOLEY] Pooley ancestry Hello My mother was a pooley, born in March Cambridgeshire in 1946 Her father was Horace pooley born in Chester le street co Durham 1923 Horaces father was also Horace, born seaham harbour ,co durham1887 Horace was the son of john pooley from sudbourne 1855, who must have been in the merchant navy and settled in seaman harbour .my mum Carol always thought that her family originated from up north, until I traced the records back to john.the family all worked in the colliery at easington, until Horace senior and his wife francis (graham)decided to move to st Albans to get her son's away from mining.quite strange really as I now live in felixstowe, and am looking at visiting the churchyard to see if I can find any headstones of our ancestors. If I remember correctly, Dinah/Diana was one of the two children of Honor who survived to raise a family. After her start in life, I have a great deal of respect for her. I always felt sorry for Honor. I have done--and am still doing--research on the Pooley line and I have a LOT of information, particularly on William & Lydia, and Robert and Mary Ann (am still ploughing through William's parents, John and Sarah!). Robert and Mary Ann were my great-grandparents. I do have a few photos from Wetheringsett, but not of Robert or William. My Grandmother was Dinah Joan Pooley b. 1870 Eye, Suffolk, daughter to Honour Pooley b.1845 Wetheringsett. Honour was the daughter of William Pooley b. 1818 & Lydia Keeble. Do you have any information on that branch? or infact on Robert Pooley b.1845 who married Marianne Stammers? Would also be grateful to know if you have any photographs of any Pooley's from Wetheringsett? Regards Elaine Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Really. I did send email to both Patricia and Jane on this board. I wish I could have their personal email adresses but I guess they will get the message anyway. Thank you for you advice. Yes I did read the book and also found some informations about my own village and my family in it. I grew up going to the commemoration every year as it was happening in front of my great grandmother café. Albert Pooley's story is terrible but so remarkable indeed. The commemoration is still going on. This year it will on the 28th may and we are expected to have the children and some people from Paradis, and also veterans, relatives and friends coming over from the UK. You are more than welcome to join us if you happen to want to come to the North of France. We are now in touch and I am very happy about that, Regards, Hélène Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. In fact, my father was a cousin of Albert Pooley's wife and remembers him from before 1939. My father is now 85 and Albert Pooley died some years ago. Jane Ralph is Albert Pooley's grand daughter and her details are also on this link. I'm sure Jane and her mother could give you lots of information about what happened. Also, there is a very good book detailing it all called 'The Vengeance of Private Pooley' by Cyril Jolly which is out of print but you could probably get hold of it on Amazon.
