BRETT, President of the board and James M. COX, John KELEHER, James M. SHORT, and Allan MeKAY as Town Trustees. “The City Marshall was David FAIRFIELD; Assessor, N. BULLOCK; Treasurer, T. H,. FOSS; City Attorney, James HANNA.” “The principal mercantile houses were on First Street, viz: JANSSEN and Co., P. H. RYAN, Thomas WALSH, L. C. SMITH and Co., ROHNER and ELLERY, W. J. SWEASEY and HENRY Bros.. M. H. BALDWIN was in the harness and saddleery business. John POLLARD kept a shoe shop; WEEK and SHORT a drug-store. WALKER also kept and drug-store. The post office was also on First Street, with Charles HENEY as post master. C. E. BIGALOW ran a blacksmith’s shop. There were two hotels, both on first Street – the old Lick House, recently pulled down, then kept by Tom KELLY and the Russ house, kept by E. BULKELEY.” “Eureka supported at that time two doctors – Dr. BARBAR and Dr. CLARK; and six lawyers – James HANNA, J. J. DeHAVEN, Judge HAVENS, Walter. S. BROCK, Charles WESTMORELAND and A. C. LAWRENCE.”
