I have found my g-g-grandmother, Margaret Carney, living with B.J. Pollard on the 1860 census, Onslow Co., NC. I suspect that she was his sister, but I do not know for a fact. Do you know who B.J. Pollard's siblings were or anything that would help me? B.J. is listed as being 58 and Margaret Carney is 56. Thank you for any help you can send my way. Nita Phillips email: nphil@bellsouth.net

I do know that George W. married a Mary Ann Gillett and around the turn of the century moved to the Durham area due to economic hard times in Onslow County. It may have been that there was a family connection that brought them to that area.

I have tried to make a connection with these Pollards and my Pollard family, but haven't been able to so far. Doesn't mean there isn't any, I just haven't made it yet. The funny part is that my ggggrandfather, Etheldred "Dread/Dred" Pollard m. Lucinda "Cinda" Smith, supposedly born in Onslow Co, NC. They had a son, Benjamin J. Pollard (b. abt 1843 Johnston Co, NC; d. aft 1900 Wake Co, NC) m. Grizzy Ann Taylor (b. abt 1846 NC; d. 1880-1900 Wake Co, NC).

I have personally done little research on this line, but plan to make it a focus this year. Thanks for sharing what you have found. It will give me a foundation on which to base my research so that I can come to a conclusion myself. I am happy to share whatever information I might find. It's important to have the correct information and so hard to find it all the time!! Feel free to contact me at my email address. I, too, would like to know what you have based your information on.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/hEBBAIB/1188.2.1.1.1 Message Board Post: I have found no data that substantiates the claim that Ervin (Irvin) Pollard who died in Carroll County, Georgia with children: Ann, Abraham, Fred, Jerry, and Stephen was the son of a Stephen Thomas Pollard and his wife Alice Bray. Instead, my research shows that the above Ervin (Irvin) Pollard was the son of John Pollard and Easter (Pugh?). Irvin had brothers Thomas, John, Frederick, Pugh, Steven and one sister Elizabeth who married Joel Knight. Irvin's father, John Pollard, died about 1795 in Pitt County, NC and his widow, Easter, moved about 1810 to Greene County, GA and later about 1820 to Fayette Co., GA. Mark Pollard of McDonough, GA, based on research by his grandfather and summarized in an article "The Pioneer Times of Irvin Pollard and His Family in Fayette County" also gives a similar account of a Levi Pollard whose son Stephen Thomas Pollard married an Alice Bray. Mark and I have discussed his grandfather's research and the many problems I have with it. Was the information gotten from him? Although they may exist, I have not been able to find any references in NC, SC, or GA records of a Levi Pollard nor of a Stephen Thomas Pollard who married an Alice Bray. I would like to know what evidence exists, however my data strongly shows that Irvin Pollard was not the son of a Stephen Thomas Pollard and Alice Bray but of John and Easter Pollard. I would appreciate your letting me know the sources of your research and I will be happy to share further what I have to support my above concerns and claims. Thanks. George R. Slayton Marietta, GA

If you have further questions, I can check my database. I'm also looking for Pollard researchers who would be willing to contribute research on any of the Pollards that are already in my reports. A canal ran from Chesapeake, VA to South Mills and there was quite a bit of migration along there during that time. I don't have a ton of Pollard names at my finger tips, but this is what I do have: Malcombe Pollard, son of Josiah Pollard died on his way from NY to Norfolk, VA in 1775. His sons were EKH Pollard and Levi Pollard, who was born in Yorktown, VA abt. 1746 and died in South Mills, NC in 1790. One son of Levi was Stephen Thomas Pollard b, 1775 in Morfolk, VA, died 1830. Married to Alice Bray. His children were Ervin (Irvin), born Willmington, NC, d. Carroll Co., GA. Other children were Fredrick, Elisha, Thomas. Ervin's children were: Ann, Abraham, Fred, Jerry, Stephen, all from Georgia by that time abt. 1830.

South Mills, NC is in Camden County, just south of the Great Dismal Swamp and the VA border. At one time it was considered part of Currituck County.
