    2. Manifests, Census and church records do not guarantee correct spelling. We Americans tend to expect everybody understands the need for correct spelling. Manifests were written at the port of departure. If the purser (?) could not speak the same language as the passenger he would have guessed what it sounded like. If the passenger was illiterate or had documents hard to read that was another source of confused spelling. And if you are working from an index transliterated in the US the error rate is high.
