In order to keep up with every thread in a topic, you need to read every letter with that topic as it comes through the mail list. This means the first letter that began that thread. I began this thread a few days ago announcing the the NY Times had opened their archives to the public for free. It used to be that you could only get it through a public library site. I was using a library site a couple of years ago to reach the NY Times archives. I don't know why but they were discontinued. I think it was because NY Times wanted to make some money with their archives. They probably found there was not that much money to be made by charging for private subscriptions to their archives. Anytime you wish to follow a thread, you have not completely read, you can do this using http://www.rootsweb.com/. Go to their site and click on Mail lists at the top of the page. Next find the one for Poland Border Surnames. At the bottom of the description of the mail list, there are two links regarding our mail list archives. The first one is the active one and the second one is the threaded one. Click on the 2nd one, and you should find all the letters with this subject grouped together. My letter should be the first one regarding this topic. This is why we ask our members to please keep the same thread once one has started. The thread is the topic. This is why we wish members would not "kidnap" someone else's topic and just type a message in the body of their letter, which is not relevant to the original topic. The same goes with "kidnapping" a digest and typing in the body it, without changing the subject matter. Continuity is a courtesy we can all display to help others. If we can keep a thread together in the archives, it makes the archives a more useful tool.
