Aliases can be for both sexes, and are for other names that the person has been known by previously, sometimes it's their mother's surname (if they were born out of wedlock), sometimes it's a stepfather's name, sometimes it's a shortened (or lengthened) form of the same surname, sometimes it's a previous version (like if a Polish Rybarczyk changed their name to the German Fischer (both words mean 'fisher' in English).
