    1. [PBS] WILK
    2. Thank you all for the valuable link ( http://www.kuijsten.de/navigator/poland/) b/c I was able to find other WILKs. However, I don't think they're my direct relatives - yet (still trying to piece things together). Thanks everyone else, too for helping with names and such. I'm having a great time, although I can only afford to do it piecemeal now. If anyone's interested, my relatives are Adalbert (Wojciech) Wilk born abt 1872 in Austria; Sofia (Zofie) Garzda (Garda)-Wilk born abt 1880 in Galicia. I have the ship manifests and US censuses, but no records prior. They lived in Avoca, PA all their "American" lives. Have a great day. -----Original Message----- From: ADAM UMPEROVITCH <ajumper28@yahoo.com> To: polandbordersurnames@rootsweb.com Sent: Thu, 4 Oct 2007 12:15 pm Subject: Re: [PBS] Warkala Hello, Thank you for your help and the information. 3. It sounds like you have a wonderful adventure ahead of you, Tolversf!! You might also use a search of Ellis Island ship manifests for immigration of other Wilks and Garzdas from the same town to find possible relatives. Look at their scanned manifests to see if they contain the names of a parent or relative in Poland or if they went to Luzerne County. Sometimes we can locate information about our direct ancestors by finding US records about their brothers and sisters. (Thank goodness my grandfather's sister came to the US and had a Social Security application I could order!) The parish record of the marriage your Adalbert and Zofia may provide some clues; baptismal records from Poland were required for marriage in the Catholic church and many times the priests recorded the information found on the documents - which included names of parents. There may be records from the church in Poland today of your family. In what towns were Adalbert and Zofia born? With this information, you can search for records microfilmed by the Latter Day Saints with a place search at: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp These records can be ordered at the Family History Center nearest you: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp Naturalization papers can also be a source of information as can death certificates. http://www.luzernecounty.org/county/row_offices/prothonotary Luzerne County Prothonotary / Clerk of Courts has Court Records from 1786 and is located at Luzerne County Courthouse, 200 North River Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18711; Telephone: (570) 825-1745, Fax: (570) 825-1757. " The prothonotary has been the clerk of court of common pleas since 1707. Court records here include divorces, naturalizations, peddlers' licenses, registration of attorneys, oaths of county officers, equity, sheriff's sales, juror lists, some tax records, and some civil court records. Other court records are with the clerk of courts." (Were they enumerated in the census as George and Sophia/Sophie - immigrated in 1899?) Best wishes on your search, Mary toliversf@aol.com wrote: > Thank you all for the valuable link ( http://www.kuijsten.de/navigator/poland/) b/c I was able to find other WILKs. 3. There are also Wilks in Canada - I know of some myself. The one came to Canada in July 1927 - know that for a fact.
