It is described as a folwark [manorial farmstead] in Maryampol county, Pogiermon district [Pagirmuonis?], parish Pokojnie [Pakuonis]. That is a bit puzzling, however; Pakuonis is some distance east-southeast of Garliava, and even farther away from Aleksotas. While all these places were in Maryampol county, this doesn't seem to fit the description of where Ryngwaldyszki was located. It seems to be farther to the northwest, near Kaunas. I don't know whether there was a mistake somewhere, or if we're dealing with different places with the same name. That happens all the time -- you establish the name of a place and figure "Yippee, we're home free now," only to find out there are five or six places with the same name, all in the same general area! Incidentally, the Website mentioned above says Ryngwaldyszki got its name in commemoration of "the first Lithuanian Grand Duke, Ryngold" -- but his Lithuanian name was Rimgaudas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryngold), and it's questionable whether he was the first Lithuanian Grand Duke. I think Ryngold is a Polonized version of his Lithuanian name. I suspect the place was called Ryngwaldyszki because of confusion between his Lithuanian name Rimgaudas, the Polonized version Ryngold, and the German place name Ringwald ("ring-forest"). All of which just shows how confusing these names can be! Sandie, I'm glad I was able to help you. It sounds as if the info I gave you fits what you have. It's possible there were other places with similar names; keep that in mind as you search. But if your sources are telling you want the area of Kanuas and Garliava, it sounds to me as if Ryngwaldyszki is correct. I hope so, and I wish you the best of luck with your research. Fred Hoffman
