Margaret, If you're searching under "Places", when the selections come up and you click on your "place", you'll see in the upper right corner of the page FILM NOTES, click on that and in the Notes section it will say something like ..."Includes indexes. Text in Polish prior to 1868; thereafter in Russian." That's been my experience anyway. But, like all things, nothing is 100%. Also, someone told me today that sometimes the index is in the front of your town (i.e, not always at the end)-- so just scroll through until you find it.
