The farthest I've been able to trace back my ancestry is Stephen Mashock/ Majchrzak (The name has several spellings, but these two are the most common in my direct line). Stephen was born December 1839 or 1840 in (He was either born in or lived in Posen/Posnon which was in Prussia at the time). He died in Princeton, Green Lake County, Wisconsin, USA. He married Rosa and then later Maria Klappa, and his children are Evenoch, Anna, Mary, Frank, Frances, and Martha. Frank was born in 1879 in Neshkoro, Marquette County, Wisconsin. He died 1973 in Princeton, Green Lake, Wisconsin. He married Evaline Kotkowski and his children are Elizabeth, Gertrude, Florian, Lucile, Rose, Custanzy, and Isabelle. Florian is my grandfather and died in 2000 (I think in Milwaukee, Wisconsin). He married Eleanore Bykowski and his children are Robert, James, Michael, Thomas, Mary, Linda, and Jean. Thomas is my father, still living and I and my sister are his only children. My family is Christian, and my grandparents were Catholic, so I think my ancestors might have been the same... I would like to continue tracing my ancestry back in time, but I've hit a wall when trying to find Stephen's parents, mainly because he and his parents were born in Poland. Can you help me? Thank you very much, ~Melissa Mashock

I assume you know that just because a person named Posen or Poznan as their place of birth or residence, it does not necessarily mean they were from the city with the same name. They could have been from the county or province. I remember seeing this surname in the past on our mail list. I know you have been searching for a while. I just checked the Poznan Project and found four named Stephanus Majchrzak,w ho married in 1846, 1860, 1862 and 1885. The respective parishes were Chonica, Koscielec Kolo, Grabowo and Ksiaz -[Zions]. http://bindweed.man.poznan.pl/posen/search.php If you just type in the surname, you may find other parishes. Many times given names were given in a few or several generations. If there are birth records available on microfilm with the LDS for the time frame you have for his birth, I suggest ordering them and checking to see if you can find his birth record. Sometimes it is more difficult to find records in the US, which will tell us where our ancestor(s) were born when they have been here as long as yours have. You could try using microfilmed records as a last resort. Finding places where the surname was still is may help. It may prove to be a tedious and fruitless way of trying to find him, but it may also be your last resort. In 2002, there were 19,409 adults using this surname, with several thousand of them in the old province of Poznan, which existed from 1975 until the end of 1998. It's like looking for a needle in a haystack unless you can find someone in your family who may have some very old records. It may take finding every living person descending from him in the US. Maybe someone has some old records or recollections of old families stories with some familiar place names. If not, than finding every single possible record on him in the US and the first generation may help. Sometimes there are local history books written about the areas where families lived in the pioneer days of our country. See if there is a local historical society in that area with something like that. I have seen some Family History Centers with extensive information regarding family histories in the area where they are located. Check with them. Good luck to you. I'm sorry I may not have been much help, but it's a hard one to figure out when you do not have the exact information you need to do your research.
