Dear Oliver and others, I agree that typing SURNAMES in CAPS in the subject line and in the body letters is an excellent habit to develop, but I forewarn you that just reading a subject line may cause you to miss a relative. Sometimes letters contain places where your relatives may have lived, and will give the names of in-laws. In reading all letters and comparing notes, you will also learn a lot more about research. Sometimes people give you a tip on how they found a bit of information, which may help you. To Everyone, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to start anything or criticize anyone. Tina is totally right - if you limit yourself to just reading those with "your" name or your interest, then you will miss out. I just thought I had read that "rule" somewhere. I appreciate all the advice and look forward to reading many more emails from around the world. You all have been so helpful. Let me step out of this gracefully - I should never had said anything. Oliver, My letter was not meant to be a criticism of your suggestion. You were correct that it's a good idea to capitalize surnames in the subject line. I only wanted to add to your thoughts on the subject ... just carrying a couple of steps forward to help people, as you were. Please accept my apology to you for not making myself clear about that in my previous letter. Tina On Wed, Feb 24, 2010 at 9:12 AM, <toliversf@aol.com> wrote: > > To Everyone, > I'm sorry. I hope Oliver's comments make all who post messages aware of the importance of the subject line. I get more than I can read and am pleased when I can tell from the subject whether an email will be of interest to me. Bronwyn.
