Greetings, I have just made a discovery of what I believe is a Polish baptism certificate. I can make out the parents name, but I was wondering if someone may be able to translate the document for me?? I have it scanned and can send it to those who can translate. I hope someone can help. Regards Jon
Hi jon- I'll take a go at it, as well. On 5/18/07, Jon Oldfield <tripleHH@bigpond.com> wrote: > > Greetings, > I have just made a discovery of what I believe is a Polish baptism > certificate. Margaret: Have you checked Ellis Island and the Steve Morse site as well as collections Canada? Many of the Eastern Europeans are listed on Ellis Island records as aliens in transit to Canada. You might find something there that could give you a clue. You do not have to register for the stevemorse site and it is one of the best for searching. http://stevemorse.org/ My father's passport shows that he sailed from the port of Danzig and my mother sailed from Liverpool. They both arrived in Quebec. My mother travelled by train to Ethelbert, Manitoba and I think my father was in the Edmonton area first. I have read microfilmed parish records from the Galicia area that have notes in the margins stating where in Canada someone was going. I hope you have the name of the town or village they lived in. Good luck with searching. My husband's grandparents came from Galicia in 1902. They made their way to Liverpool, and took a ship from there to Quebec City. It was cheaper to go this"indirect" route - any "direct" sailing from either Hamburg, Bremen, or Antwerp, would have cost twice as much as going via Liverpool. We can only surmise how they travelled to Liverpool, but I would guess they took a smaller boat across the English channel to London, and then travelled overland to Liverpool. They had 4 children with them. From Quebec they took a train to Winnipeg, and then made their way 100 miles north, to where they were going to live. Their youngest child died soon after they arrived at their destination. It would depend on how much money they had, as to where they departed from. Where would they have settled? If they settled in the Maritimes, they would have gone to Halifax. If they settled in Quebec, or further west, they would have gone to either Montreal or Quebec City. They could also have gone to Halifax and travelled overland to their destination. Check the months of the sailings - perhaps in the Winter months the ships only went to Halifax? If they were farmers, the land grants (online) could tell you what month they applied for land. Did you try Ellis Island to see if they came through the USA. My grandparents came back and forth 2x....the first time they settled in New Jersey, the 2nd time they arrived New Jersey and headed to Toronto Ontario. Back in the "early days" they were also able to travel by water via the Great Lakes into Canada. Just another avenue for you to check. charlene in Ontario Canada. margaret walker <mgszk@hotmail.com> wrote: Can anyone tell me where would the most likely departure point be for persons leaving Austria/Galacia/Ukraine about 1906-1909 headed to Halifax, Canada? In 1907 my father, his sister and their parents, (my grand parents) arrived aboard the Lake Michigan (a CPR Ship) at Quebec City on May 9, 1907 (and went on to Montreal) according to Library and Archives Canada microfilm left Antwerp, Belgium April 24th, 1907, a fifteen day trip. Hope this helps. Joanie, Thanks for your response, Cieszyn/ Teschen Is in Czech. I'm looking for a good map of that area now. The + sign means death - that is to signify a cross, I believe, so a priest looked up this record and recorded the date of death of the individual also.
