Ray, It's very important to learn where your family was from in Silesia. The reason for this is so you can learn where the records are stored. Records are filed by religion, parish and/or the civil administration district. Just knowing a name is now enough. There is no index system for these records.in on a central national system. In 1990 there was a study done on surnames and where the adults with specific surnames were lving in Poland. Using http://www.herby.com.pl/herby/indexslo.html, you can find this breakdown: Nazwisko Ogólna liczba Rozmieszczenie Liebich 46 Wa:9, BB:2, Ka:24, Kr:1, Op:5, Po:4, Wr:1 There were 46 in the entire country. Abbreviations for the provinces where they were found: Warszawskie Bielskie Katowickie Krakowskie Opolskie Poznanskie Wroclawskie At the above link, there is a list of the these provinces so people can use it in conjuncton with the lists of names and places. Click on "<javascript:legenda();>Tutaj znajdujsiobja[nienia skrótów " on that page. You will get a little popup window with the list. On it there is a link called "<javascript:mapa();>Zobacz map" to click on to get a map with all the provinces on it. This will help you narrow down somewhat where your family may have been in 1823, but as said before, you have to learn exactly where they lived to further your research. I have been introduced to a nice version of it by Voyteck Ernest, who lives in Sweden, through the GenForum Poland message board. You need to use the diacritical marks for this site. You can type in the place, and it will take you to the place you want. Go to this site: http://www.dir.icm.edu.pl/dirop/index.php/Slownik_geograficzny/Tom_I/1 There are two ways to use this site. 1. In the box next to w haslach, type in the place you wish to locate. I do not know it the site will use a wildcard of any sort. If you do not have the Polish alphabet installed on your computer, you can find the proper letters at this site: http://www.pogonowski.com/Slowniki/pol-ang/pol_ang.php. Click on the letter, and it will appear in the box above it. You can copy and paste it to the Slownik search site. Click on szukaj, and it will find your place. 2.
