Shannan M Hinners "No matter what happens in life, remember that you don't have the power to control everything, But you do have the power to control how it affects you." -- Richard Llewellyn -----Original Message----- From: polandbordersurnames-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:polandbordersurnames-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Fred Hoffman Sent: Friday, June 22, 2007 12:19 PM To: polandbordersurnames@rootsweb.com Subject: [PBS] Letter from State Archive in Krakow Hi, John Dybowski <jdybowski@roadrunner.com> asked for help understanding a note from the Polish State Archives branch in Krakow. Shannon Hinners kindly offered a translation, but I'm afraid it was not too clear. The note said the Archive searched the records of the Roman Catholic parish in Iwanowice, to which the Sulkowice now in Krakow county belonged at the time in question, but found no birth records for Andrzej or Antoni Dybowski. They added that there are two other places named Sulkowice in Krakow province, one a town in Myslenice county, the other a village near Andrychow in Wadowice county. The records for those places are not held by the Archive, so they can't search them. If you're interested, they suggest contacting the Roman Catholic parish churches that would have the records in question. For the Sulkowice near Myslenice, the address is: Parafii Najswietszego Serca Pana Jezusa w Sulkowicach ul. Tysiaclecia 1a 32-440 Sulkowice POLAND For the one near Andrychow, the address is: Parafii Milosierdzia Bozego w Sulkowicah-Legu ul. Koscielna 8 34-120 Sulkowice-Leg POLAND To sum up, there are no birth records for Andrzej or Antoni Dybowski in the Sulkowice records the Archive possesses. But there are two other places named Sulkowice, and the Archive does not have those records. It makes sense to contact them, and see if that leads anywhere. You'll have to contact the individual parish churches for that -- unless, of course, the records you need are available from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. I assume you checked that first, since dealing with the FHL is much faster and cheaper than writing to Poland. I checked the FHL catalog just now and didn't find any records for any of the Sulkowices, so I'd say writing the individual churches is the next logical step. If you need help writing a letter in Polish, there's a letter-writing guide here: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/rg/images/36339_LWGPolish.pdf So one Sulkowice is a dead end -- maybe one of the other two will turn out to be the right one. 3. Hi John, Just a pssing comment: It seems strange to have Malopolskie called the Lesser Poland. I guess Washington would be hard to translate into Polish words, but in Poland they also call it Washington. :) Smile ... I think Malopolskie sounds better. http://mapa.szukacz.pl/ is a website for finding places on a map in Poland. There are 8 places named Sulkowice. There are a few near Krakow. Do you have any idea in what gmina or powiat this place is located? If you know that you can use this website to get a little history on the place and learn in what the parish was: http://www.dir.icm.edu.pl/dirop/index.php/Slownik_geograficzny/Tom_I/1 They are in Polish. If you do not know the language, you can use these two sites to translate the words into English: http://www.poltran.com and http://www.pogonowski.com/Slowniki/pol-ang/pol_ang.php You have to use the Polish alphabet to use all but the first website. The first website will give you the proper Polish spelling for places. You can copy and paste the correct letters of the alphabet, if you have not installed them into your computer. My family is originally from there, but I cannot find any "real" information on the internet about it. From what I can tell it is a very small town. Also, if there is a known phone directory, that could be useful as well. On another note....I was infromed by a pretty reliable source that we had an "Uncle" Dr. Benedykt Dybowski (1833-1930). Now, I know the basic history of him from what I have gathered on the net, but his family history is VERY vague. He has a brother Wladislaw b.1838 and his father was Jan, but I am trying to find a connection somewhere within the 3rd generation. If anyone knows of a book that might be helpful or anything that could be useful I would VERY much appreciate it. If anyone has any information that might help....I thank you, deeply, in advance. 2. Hi Jane, Thank you for calling Ancestry.com. I'm at work, and would have had to wait until tonight to do it. Please keep us posted on what they have to say. Have you forwarded them the letter from this company? Did they have anything to say about FTDNA? That's where I had my cousins DNA tests made, as have all of the other people with their surname. We are doing a Y chromosone study on them because everyone in the US doing research on this surname had hit a brickwall. We have been grouping the DNA studies to learn who the ones are more closely related, and working the areas where we know everyone has lived for other records. She asked that I forward email to her to see how it was being handled. 3. Unfortunately, I have looked at the marriage records transcribed from the Apatin church records and the following is what is listed: Simon Podolski (son of Simon P and Katharina Babarski) b. 1787 d. 17 Apr 1841 at 54 years married Elizabeth Kretzinger (daughter of Johann K and Elisabeth Burger) on 17 Feb 1817 Elisabeth was b. 06 Aug 1796 and d. 01 Jul 1866 This is the record that gave me the names Simon Podolski and Katharina Barbarski(y), but no other info. It may be hopeless since I simply don't have any leads that pre-date Apatin. I have no dates or places re life events for either one. I have rather complete data on their descendants except for the exact dob and birthplace of their son, Simon born about 1787 in ?. Simon married in Apatin, Bacs Bodrog Hungary (now in Serbia). I have all pertinent info from the date of his marriage through subsequent generations. His son b. 1834 in Apatin was also named Simon and his son, b. 1871 in Apatin, was another Simon. This last Simon was my grandfather who came to the U.S. in 1910. He spoke German, Hungarian and Serbo-Croatian. Nothing I have indicates a Polish background except, of course, for the surname. It has been suggested to me that they might have been from Silesia; that he may have been a soldier who was sent to settle in Apatin as apparently some veterans were. I simply don't know where to begin looking and any suggestions for where/how I might begin to look for Simon and Katharina would be most appreciated. 2. I have not heard anything from Ancestry.com on this company. Most genealogy researchers have been using FTDNA. Has anyone heard of this company? Maybe it is just spam. 3. I received this, too. My DNA research started with the National Geographic Genographic Project. From there I uploaded results to FTDNA and signed appropriate privacy statements. Has this outfit gotten hold of those lists somehow? I plan to call the number they provide and grill them about their sources, etc. ----- Original Message ----- From: vellis@jps.net<mailto:vellis@jps.net> To: polandbordersurnames@rootsweb.com<mailto:polandbordersurnames@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, June 18, 2007 2:17 PM Subject: Re: [PBS] Ancestry.com Partners with Sorenson Genomics I have not heard anything from Ancestry.com on this company.
