I have booked a trip to Poland for September, 2007.I will fly into Warsaw and work from there to find possible relatives and information about both my parents who immigrated to the United States separately from different parts of Poland and were married in Erie, PA in 1913 and later moved to Milwaukee, WI in1917 or 1918. My father, Wadislaw (Walter) Ladislaus Domalewski, named his parents to be Stanley Domalewski and Michalene Leskowski Domalewski. He reportedly came from the area of Poland close to Lithuania. My father's draft registration shows his birthplace to be Lodziajek, Poland. My mother,Anna Grabowski Domalewski, named her parents to be Frawzisek (Frank) Grabowski and Alexandra Zameroski Grabowski. My mother's Naturalization papers showed her birthplace to be Wolka Piaseczna, Poland, which I believe is close to the border with Germany. Essentially, other than the above information, I am flying blind. What can I find in Warsaw? Best method of travel in Poland? Any other help that anyone can give me. All help will be appreciated. Hello. Recently, I wrote to the Archives in Gdansk, Poland, requesting information about costs etc, with regard to locating information about my late fathers' family. On the 14th of June, I was emailed a lenghthy reply, which I had translated, vaguely, by a husband of a late friend. He begged me not to delve into information, but stubbornly, I insisted he read out the document sent me. I can understand his concern, to protect me from war horrors, but something inside me says "keep on trying". Basically, what the letter said was that for a "fee", they would attempt to procure the information I required, if there was any. Fair enough. They also stated, that if I did not wish to do so, they would, in their own time, review the request, and if they found anything, would be in touch. This much, I believe to be true? according to my translator. I did find that asking the document to be translated, was not to my satisfaction, and imagine my horror, when after writing to say, "ok, let's leave it for the time being, and we will see what you come up with", another email arrived, once again in Polish. I do not feel confident in returning to this gentleman, to ask him to translate again, so wonder if anyone else is able to do this for me. I can if you wish type out the first letter I received, however, this is the second: To jest potwierdzenie dostarczenia wiadomosci, ktora zostala wyslana na adres apgda@gdansk.ap.gov.pl. Questions depends on several facts, however I will add a few suggestions. I went to Poland in 2001, spent three weeks there. Also took in France and Germany. I also was tracing my roots. My daughter went with me, and I corresponded with a young lady who esacorted us by car all around. I paid her expenses. I found and visited both villages that my grandparents came from. I should mention the names. On the paternal side it is KLUSKOWSKI, and ZMIJEWSKI, on the maternal side. They were born here in US My father's side came from Bydgozcz, and my mother's side from Zmijewo. I visited the church, took pictures and bought post cards. Do a lot of that, it is very important. I visited the cemetery in back of the church, and there were many Zmijewski's buried there. Stayed in most of the Palaces, and when we got to Warsaw, we stayed at the Hilton. At the time everything was much cheaper then in USA. The Palaces are interesting, and many turned into hotels now. It was a great experience, I know you will enjoy your stay.. John, The various WEB pages describing Dybów (nee Nieszawa) Castle are mostly incomplete. The best and, in my view, the most complete, detailed and accurate exposition may be found in the Polish Geographical Atlas (in Polish, of course) under the term "Dybowo". That item dates the original construction of the Castle back to around 1229, a full 200 years before the time suggested by others. It also claims that the name was changed from Nieszawa to Dybów around 1431 along with the corresponding name change of the village when it was rebuilt. Of course, Dybów or Dybowo, the village, no longer exists by that name. Another Nieszawa was built about 40 km upriver from the original site. The Castle, however, remained at the original location.
