Have you tried the search at Ancestry? Yes, the time period makes a significant difference. You can look for NARA microfilm. This pages lists "US Ports of Arrival and their Available Passenger Lists 1820-1957". http://www.genesearch.com/ports.html Ancestry search: http://www.ancestry.com/search/ This page shows what ports with dates covered: http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/default.aspx?rt=40 Although a subscription is required to see the actual manifests, you can search for the names you are seeking. Then, you can post here or on one of the boards or mailing lists for a look up, or check to see if your library has access to the Library Edition of Ancestry. Other lookup sites include: http://genforum.genealogy.com/recordlookups/ http://genforum.genealogy.com/immigrants/ If the people were naturalized citizens, you could get their naturalization papers for more information; check the courthouse where they lived. They also may be listed in the Social Security Death Index if deceased and you can use the SS-5 letter to send for their SS application, which is filled with information: http://ssdi.rootsweb.com/ http://www.ancestry.com/learn/library/article.aspx?article=919 Best wishes for success in your search, Mary T Hoitt wrote: > Hi Mary, > > My family came to New York in 1950 and 1951. All the ships are listed at the NARA website. This is their page regarding immigration: http://www.archives.gov/genealogy/immigration/ This link gives you the name of every port and the dates of operation: http://www.archives.gov/genealogy/immigration/passenger-arrival.html#film Microfilmed records can be rented through the LDS Family History Centers. You can check this site to see what records they have: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=localitysearch&columns=*,180,0 This site will help you locate a Family History Center near you: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp People who volunteer at the Family History Centers can help you order film. They hve viewers at their facilities. You can rent the film, but they need to remain at their facility. Good luck in your search. Hello I have just joined this list and hope I am on the right board. My father, Janek MARSZALEK was born in Sulejow, County of Stanislawow, Poland in 1928. I believe that this is now part of the Ukraine. Is this correct and if so how do I find out what the town is now called? I have put in Sulejow in google but the town that comes up is near Warsaw and that is not the correct one. The only other details that I have are : His fathers name was Wawrzyniec Mothers name Katarzyna He had a brother and a sister whose name may have been Kazia (from the back of a photo) They were Catholic. Any help or pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. My father is still alive but remembers very little as he was about 10 years old when he left. I am hoping that if I can find some more details it may jog his memory. I was simply translating the note from Iryna Bodnar, written to Sonia van Heerden <soniavanheerden@hotmail.com>. When Iryna wrote "My cousin Stefanija Racka told me about you," the "you" referred to Sonia, not me. Iryna wouldn't know me from Adam -- I'm just the guy who translated the note for Sonia. If I'm figuring this correctly, Sonia is the one you want to talk to, as she's the one in touch with Iryna. She can give your message to Iryna, and Iryna could then pass your message on to Stefanija. I hope that clarifies things. Fred Hoffman
Zbigniew, I can't believe you are searching for Pysz. I have been researching my father's family: Jan Pysz, who is my grandfather. He came to NY in 1907. The Pysz family was from somewhere around Lublin Poland, perhaps Janow Lubelski. You can write me at : _spre@aol.com_ (mailto:spre@aol.com) if you have time. I will share what I have as well. Hi Everyone and Fred Hoffman, I am writing regarding the letter from Iryna Bodnar and Fred Hoffman. Iryna mentions that her cousin, Stefanija Racka, told her about Fred. I was surprised to read that because my great grandmother was also Stephanie Racka. The note reads: My name is Iryna Bodnar, daughter of Dmytro Bodnar, who was born in Dibrowa [Polish Da~browa] near Kotynets' [Polish Chotyniec], to parents Mykhail Bodnar and Anna nee Chita (who was killed on 19 January 1945 in Dibrowa and buried in Zalis'ka Volia [Zaleska Wola]). My cousin Stefanija Racka told me about you. If Iryna reads this note, I would appreciate it if she could write to me. I would really like to get in touch with her cousin, Stefanija Racka. Thank you, Fred, for any help that you can give to me. Walt Wasilewski ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
I think the family surname is JASINSKI and have seen it on a headstone as YUSHINSKI. In the US parish register for the marriage of her son, the mother's surname starts with a Ja and ends with czk. Would this still be JASINSKI or could it be another surname? Thanks, Harriet
I am searching for a village named Koscielna - township Jakiwiszki where a baptism occurred in 1834. Also I know Folwark means a large farm but the name of the frarm isRyngwaldyczki. Can someone give me assistance as to where these places were at that time? They may have been in an area of present day Lithuania near Virballis as this is the area my Salzburger immigrants were in. Dear List Members, I'd like to ask you for help with accessing more detailed information (manifest?) from lists of passengers arriving to the U.S. from Europe in the second half of 19th century. I once found my grand grand father Joseph Gasinski, born 1820 in Andrychow (Brzezinka), in then Austria. I know he went to America twice. I've been gathering genealogy information of the following families: Glowka, Gasinski, Piesch/Pysz, Tietz, Dobras, Porombka. I'll be happy to share all the information I have with anyone interested. I don't speak Ukrainian, but I read it fairly well. I think this translation is accurate: ========== Good day, Miss Sonia, My name is Iryna Bodnar, daughter of Dmytro Bodnar, who was born in Dibrowa [Polish Da~browa] near Kotynets' [Polish Chotyniec], to parents Mykhail Bodnar and Anna nee Chita (who was killed on 19 January 1945 in Dibrowa and buried in Zalis'ka Volia [Zaleska Wola]). If that is true, please contact me. But I'm familiar enough with Polish, Russian and Ukrainian to be fairly sure I've got it more or less right.
