    3. Hi Rose, Glad you had a wonderful experience! We would like to go to Poland next year... did you drive at all? If not , how did you get around? I've heard that driving in Poland is worse than driving in Italy! We survived that, but wonder if we should try it in Poland. Thanks, Sandra in sunny CA Jack and Rose <thankgod@optonline.net> wrote: Hi Noreen Thanks for asking IT WAS BETTER THAN MY HUSBAND OR I EVER ANTICIPATED.... 1. [PBS] Valentine Lukowiak---can you help me find his ancestors?
    2. charles chase
    3. Dear list purveyors My grandfather Valentine (Walenty) Lukowiak came to America around 1890 from somewhere in Poland/Prussia (possibly near Golejewko, Wielkopolskie ). He was born about January 18, 1866 and died in Macomb Co, MI August 25, 1946. He was married three times, having all of his children with the first wife, Katherine Rosinska (1869-1925). The 1920 census for Detroit, Wayne Co, MI lists the following children at home: ---Stella (25)--cigar maker at cigar factory , Joseph (23)--salesman in poolroom, Mary (21)--cigar maker in cigar factory, Celia (19)--inspector in auto factory, John--(Heine) (17)--helper in foundry, Alex (15), Antoinette (12), Frances (10), Edward (7), Leonard (9 mo) I have not been able to find any info on how Valentine came to America (I have searched many passenger lists), where he grew up in Europe or anything about his ancestors. Any insight into the history of my grandfather that you might be able to provide would be very much appreciated. Charles Chinoski-Chase

    3. Well, it turns out I've been making these since I was a kid! I just didn't know the Polish name. Our little spin on the cabbage rolls are to precook the rice and to add finely chopped red, orange, yellow and green peppers. I love them! My non-Polish husband sighs and eats one or two but my siblings and I chow down when we have a family reunion. How can people not like these??? 3. I never heard of until my children started school and both of my parents came from Poland. School made their " Pigs in Blanket" with a Hotdog with dough wrapped around. Quick and easy. Also kids wanted slices of cheese placed in the hotdog and then it was put in oven till hotdog was done and cheese melted. I'd say the American version.

We had it at family gatherings mostly when she could get away with serving it to us kids. Not too bad actually. 3. This is how the Slovaks make Holubky. It is also called Pig-in-the-Blanket and it is ground beef or ground pork or a combination of both. In Slovak Holub means pigeon, Holuba means squab and Holubica means dove. Rather cut and dry as names go.
