I suspected they might be Polonized versions of Lithuanian or Belarusian names. So I wondered if searching in Poland, in its modern borders, would be a waste of time. In such cases, the best place to look is the massive 15-volume Polish-language gazetter _Slownik geograficzny Krolestwa Polskiego_, published in the late 19th century. It does not mention a "Ryngwaldyczki," but it does mention a folwark (manorial farmstead) called Ryngwaldyszki (Volume 10, p. 104). It was located in the county of Maryampol, district of Aleksota, parish of Godlewo. This area is now in Lithuania -- Maryampole is Marijampole, Godlewo is Garliava. The Garliava area is just a little south of Kaunas (Polish name Kowno). You can search the SGKP for specific names of places at this site: http://www.dir.icm.edu.pl/dirop/index.php/Slownik_geograficzny/Tom_I/30 Under "Wyszukiwanie," you can search for entry names ("w haslach") or within the actual text of entries (w tekscie). Text searches take longer, but are still reasonably fast. Of course, you have to spell the names correctly. A search for "Ryngwaldyczki" comes up empty, but "Rynwaldyszki" finds the place in question -- but you have to type in the name with the slash-L, not plain L. You can get around that by using "wild cards," ? for any single character, * for any combination of characters. Thus if you seach the entry titles for RYNGWA?D*, you get one match: Ryngwaldyszki. So you can find many places if you search correctly, but there is a bit of a learning curve involved. I couldn't find any entries mentioning Jakiwiszki or this particular village Koscielna, but that may just be because they were awfully small; or perhaps "Jakiwiszki" has been misspelled and isn't the correct name. Still, it may be correct. I notice the compilers of the SGKP did not always have much info on smaller villages in Lithuania. Perhaps they just didn't have access to sources for Lithuania as detailed as those for Polish territory. Normally you could study maps of areas in Lithuania at: http://www.maps.lt/redirect.asp?l=2 For some reason, when I tried it just now, the site was very slow to respond; usually it's much quicker. I wasn't able to take a close look. But a search for Garliava should put you very, very close to the place you're looking for. I tried Google maps and it showed Garliava and Aleksotas, but I couldn't find any places with names corresponding to Jakiwiszki (which would probably be something like Jakiviskiai) and Ryngwaldyszki (Ringvaldiskiai?). Perhaps the maps aren't detailed enough. It's also quite possible these places no longer exist, have been absorbed into other communities, or have different names now. "Koscielna" is a Polish word meaning "of the church," and a _koscielna wies_, literally "church village," was usually a property owned by the Church, as opposed to property owned by a local noble or by the government or king. You would expect Lithuanians to rename such a place, perhaps with a Lithuanian word meaning much the same thing (Lithuanian for "church" is _baz^nyc^ia_, using ^ to stand for the little v diacritical mark over the Z and C). Or under Communist rule it might have been given a completely different name, one with no hint of a religious connection. _Ryngwaldyszki_ is a Polish rendering of a Lithuanian adaptation of a German name (Ringwald) -- also a prime candidate for renaming. So even if these places still exist as independent communities, I'd expect them to have different names. You may need the help of someone in the area, a local historian or long-time resident, to find out for sure. I hope this helps you find what you're looking for, Sandie. Work records shows the name of Wachock Radom Parents, Joseph Matuszyk and Regina Mikolajczyk, (Mikolajezyk, Mikoluczyk, Mikoladcyk) Towns mentioned on records were Wadowice and Tarnawa Dolna. I had been emailing a Matuszyk in Poland for several months, he tried to find out information for me but never found any information He had wrote to the priest in Tarnawa Dolna and no response; he had given my letter to several of his relation and no response. He wrote to me that he would travel to Tarnawa Dolna and we would both see our ancestry village. He has relation in the town and surround area, so I was sure this was going to be my breakthrough. But no, He wrote to me several months ago and now he is sick and is unable to help me in any way. He mentioned that he thought his grandfather had brothers by the above names; but we weren't able to verify the information. I wrote to the church and to several Matuszyks in the area, no answer. I either wrote or email the state archives but no response. English and Polish (by translator on internet). I also tried to hire a researcher from the area; but he has not responded to my emails, so Im not sure what is going on there. (No, no money exchanged hands, but the uncertainty is driving me crazy) I have tried emailing and sending letters to that surname whereever I find it. In my research I did connect another family of Matuszyks; one from NY France; that felt good. Im not sure where or what else to go or do. Any suggestions. I guess if I found no relation, I still plan on going to the area, if only to walk through the town and find the church. So I may say that I maybe have walked in the footsteps of my grandfather. My family and myself leave for Slovakia last week in Sept to visit cousins; then on to Zakopane (to shop); Tarnawa Dolna, Wadowice, on to Krakow, then Boleslwiec, Poland, then back home; we have a LOT of traveling to do; we have rented a car to travel. The quirk was: Originally, I entered the street in my search, and nothing showed up. The telephone book puts gen. before the name of the street. Sandie, I have searched every place I know to search, and am not able to find a place named Koscielna, Jakiwiszki or Ryngwaldyczki. There are 22 places with Koscielna as part of a name of a place, but no stand alone name of Koscielna. In Poland today, there are only two places beginning with the letters Jaki. Actually there is a place named Jaki and one named Jakimowice. There is no place beginning with Ryng or Ring. Would you please tell us where you found these place names? Since we last corresponded about this telephone directory, there have been some changes made to how we need to use it. 1. You no longer need to use diacritical marks. 2. You do not have to tylpe in the province. 3. You only need to type in the name of the city, town or village where they live. It goes in the box where it says Miasto. 4. Ulica is street. If you know it, you can type it into the box. 5. Nazwisko means surname. They are not asking for a given name, so only use the surname. This can get tricky. If you have several villages with the same name in more than one province, you will want to know the area code to make sure you have the right village in the right province. I have not played with it long enough to understand all the nuances of the new changes. You can no longer find everyone with a specific surname in a specific province to narrow down where family members may now be living. My gr-gr-grandfather, Francis (Franz) Polk, was born April 27, 1812 in Boronow, Lubliniec, Poland. My gr-gr-grandmother, Josephine (Josefa) Slawik, was born in Dembowa Gora, Lubliniec, Poland July 04, 1819. They were married in Dembowa Gora in 1835. They had 8 children in Poland, two of which died some time before 1860. About 1853/1854 they migrated to Quebec. Francis worked building some of Canada's railroads such as the Grand Trunk. Josephine Polk gave birth to Francis (Franz) Polk on 27 July 1855 in Paris , South Dumfries Twp, Brant Co, Ontario, Canada. We therefore know where the Polks lived during a portion of their stay in Canada. About 1855 the Polks migrated to Michigan where they cleared forests and swamps to develop wonderful farm lands. They were part of the original families that founded Parisville in the "Thumb" of Michgan. Parisville is, arguably, the first Polish community in the US. CHALLENGE: I have no data on how Franz and Josefa Polk can to North America, and when. Also, I have virtually no data on the lives of these folks in Canada and specically they lived during their time in Canada. Additionally, it would be great to find out when and how they made their way to the "Thumb" of Michigan. I thank you in advance for any insight you might be able to provide. Charles Chase

One of my uncles was also interred at Stutthof and survived. According to family, as soon as he was released he left for the West, and we presume settled in Germany. To this day, we've no idea of what happened to him. We do know of one of his brothers, who was executed at Katyn.
